Cellular carriers, in turn, deliver 5G services using low-, mid- and high-frequency licensed spectrum bands. Enterprise customers purchase 5G services for two primary use cases: (1) Fixed wireless access (FWA) for locations such as branch offices. FWA services can offer unlimited data usage, but more typically they offer access setting monthly data usage thresholds, after which data bandwidth is throttled down until the end of the month. (2) Internet access for mobile users. Smartphone 5G services are typically sold as a bundle of data, messaging and voice, with the voice portion predominantly based on 4G LTE.
These services can be assessed for their geographic reach, performance, price, service plan features, service-level agreements (if available), customer support/management and connection security.

Most people use these words without knowing exactly their meaning.

I clicked big data, but the other one I was considering was DT. And I see they are both getting the most votes.  


Sometimes the word &#39;Cyber Security&#39; instead of &#39;InfoSec&#39; makes me cringe as well. But then I get over it as &#39;Cyber&#39; is everywhere now!

Every single one of these terms makes my head explode. Every one of them is meaningless.

It took a while, but I finally settled on remote working. 

Digital Transformation is definitely overused (and incorrectly used), but remote working is sorely misunderstood.

Remote working is not the same as working from home.

Digital Transformation annoys me. It&#39;s what we as IT leaders have done (or at least want to do) for most of our lives, except that this time around we have a nice buzzword to help us sell what needs to be done. 


I guess there is that.

What headline-trend or buzzword makes you cringe the most?

We partner in IT with the business. Agree that we help with innovation, but the business drives requirements and ideas to service our customers better.

Interesting that all of the comments say NO but the survey says YES.  Guess I need to be careful where I pull my samples from.


IT should often be the enabler for technology transformation but there should certainly be innovations in process, communication, financial models, etc. for which IT will play a small part.  We can&#39;t limit our definition of innovation to technology products.


There does need to be a mindset change in many companies, and IT can help lead this change. Innovation is cheap!  We know how to (or should) hypothesis, rapidly develop and test prototypes, time box activities, and utilize open source/pre-built component for doing so.


We should bring these things to the business if they don&#39;t have these capabilities.

The IT department is most effective when it enables innovation. Drivers for inniovation should come from across the business. 

Business sectors also have a strong role to play on innovation.  At IT, we typically offer solutions.  They could be innovative on a technological way.   But for a business innovation, it has to come from the line of business.

This is definitely our business - and as we moved to a federated technology organisation we also moved a more technically able workforce out to be more directly connected to further accelerate and enable this. It may also be the nature of our business as we are an R&amp;D focused biotech - so innovation is key to success and a part of our DNA. At the centre now as a more tech run organisation we do operate invest budget focusing on innovation, but this has to be aligned with our strategic objectives and in support of business goals. We are maturing this model so I would not pretend we are there yet, and innovation is always I believe a partnership - but for us science-based innovation leveraging the best we can offer with technology is a good place to start.

Strategy and software development (commercial products)

This depends on the definition of innovation.  For a consumer products or any products company, innovation is defined around the product and service offerings and will most likely be driven from the product development teams and marketing teams.  Internal innovation in business processes and business operations however more often than not is orchestrated by the IT or if one exists central strategy and transformation function.

Is the IT-department the main driver of innovation in your organization?

Yes I think it will, but it will be a slow evolution and not a revolution. Just like the move from 3G to 4G to 5G has allowed faster and more seamless access to mobile data, IoT will allow us to have more data touch points with more people, devices and situations. The challenge becomes, as it is today, how to not just be "data rich / information poor", but take control of these new tools and possibilities to drive better business outcomes.

Yes, it will definitely impact business relationships.  I also agree that companies need to have policies based around IoT. Data mining will be very important in my industry.

similar to all the other colleagues it will impact a big time even now it is happening. All these Beacons and sensors reading real time and using edge technology to processes and 5g to transfer the data in real time the business is able to know what is going on and make action about it even before it is happening proactively and it shift the focus of the business from data collection to data digestion and action upon it so no more time wasted on preparing reports and submitting them instead the decision maker is watching heat map and acting against it . This will make the organization more data driven and smarter.

I think it'll help to create automated collaborations or licensing the data and the services as well, so a company will use its data for their core business and also can get some other benefits by making it available for others who might have a use for it.
It could be a good idea to create a data broker for the customers and suppliers to meet, with a business model like airbnb or uber.

Yes, however, in many cases IoT is framed based on consumer use cases—this is often how most people become acclimated—which presents a number of challenges in the commercial/enterprise space:
1. Consumer IoT is generally not very secure and favors easy of deployment. In our side we are seeing use cases being developed that don’t account for some of the factors consumers often overlook such as the exposure of PII, strong authentication, and long-term TCO;
2. Liability is still very uncertain. It’s not clear if/how cyber insurance policies cover IoT and laws around the development of new PII-like information are not clear (for example collating data across multiple IoT systems can be used to identify individuals). Further, if IoT devices are compromised and used as a botnet and these devices use a combination of local sensors and cloud compute accountability is often unclear; and
3. There are very few standards in IoT/IIoT. At the same time business often looks at procuring these devices either as it would for standard IT devices or as standard OT devices (where protocols and standards are more established). The convergence of data and operations is still a work-in-progress.
4. Health and safety is often not a large concern for traditional IT. When you move to IoT/IIoT health and safety needs to be considered in conjunction with the CIA triad. In many cases regulation has fallen very far behind the curve resulting in a high level of uncertainty with business planning.

I think it will, and it could be a very productive part of business generation. I work in the finance industry and can think of a million ways different devices and systems could integrate directly with a business or consumer&#39;s financial institution. We already have the ability to tell devices in our home to interact with one another, allowing businesses to connect to each other this way seems inevitable.

Will the future of IoT impact business relationships?

There are a lot of things that we are looking at closely, such as data science and artificial intelligence, which are critical to our success. Web3 is talked about a lot, especially around community, because the ownership of data is a distributed model for us.

AI and blockchains are still in the essence stage. I don't see them as live products that people can use in the immediate future; they’ll still be in their research stages. In terms of blockchain, certain things like smart contracts might reach the public through real applications, but right now I don't see any substantial change. I have been expecting smart contracts to replace legal documents, but I haven't seen anybody do it yet. That could happen within the next five years, because I do see some applications that might come into that space, which will be able to reduce paperwork, especially legal paperwork.

Regarding security, there is both a huge market and need because everything is moving into the cloud. Even for a small website to move into the cloud, there are security considerations, whether it's the private data of their users or their own information. So security will be one of the larger technology sectors within the next five years. And since security is a requirement with everything moving into the cloud, DevSecOps becomes more essential because those two things are ultimately related.

Predictive analytics and machine learning, specifically, a big move away from spending so much time just analysing past performance and instead leveraging the power of cloud computing and our masses of data to help companies control their future.

In many cases companies do not know how to start on a data-driven journey but my view is this will become more and more of an imperative to stay competitive and to drive new markets.

more reliable and advanced AI/ML applications, enterprise adoption of Blockchain based systems, Edge Computing and advanced level of autonomy in automobiles is going to be there in coming years..

Definitely AI and ML, especially for the applications of recognizing and synthesizing human voice and images. Blockchain in some shape or form will become a mainstream technology in several industries. Also, wireless 5G/6G technologies will come forward to enable smart cities, autonomous cars and delivery drones.

In next 2-5 yrs, most important is nocode platforms for functions like 
- apps/CRUD/basic logical workflows

- devops
- decsecops
- rudimentary data pipelines (solving 60-70% of an org data problems)


No code platforms for data science models testing and deployment will also mature.


Beyond this I think web3 which still in nascency  in terms of adoption and understanding, will take some time to mature and gain mainstream adoption, probably a window of 10 yrs or so. 


AI is gonna mature in terms of the avoiding underlying biases a tech agent should avoid.

3-5 years - more adaption of SAS ( software as a service ) and xAS ( x: many services ), 5G based value added services, IOT based data instrumentation, Effective Sharing the data without revealing the data. faster NVRAM memories, Edge computing where intelligence sits on the edge. Multi cloud, horizontal security and prevention, decentralised control, effective use of AR/VR are some of the trends.
