There are many areas that come to mind, such as self-help, network monitoring and repair, infrastructure capacity management, code development and testing, to provide a few. I see it shifting jobs to development and maintenance,  as well as content design. If AI is used wisely, then there are many opportunities for companies to not only excel, but to become a desired company to work.

As with any major technical disruption there will be winners and losers in terms of roles and the work people do. Already we are seeing significant productivity gains in some areas where if we are being honest, the work being streamlined was never really a huge value add.  Specifically for IT teams, smaller organisations will be able to do more with non technical people or do more with the limited technical people they do have.  In larger organisations we should see a lot of innovation and I expect some types of work to be impacted, in fact this has already been happening for several years anyway with many products having AI features that reduce effort or improve capability for things that are very hard to do with people (security incident alerting as just one example).

I absolutely believe the latter— within any department, at any org, AI will be a implemented in some fashion. If you think of AI as the co-pilot, you/your team/IT service providers — as the pilot…it’s playing together nicely, not with fear of artificial intelligence taking positions. 

Change management comes into the convo from here too- who is enduring people are learning how to work with the AI, leveraging the human touch alongside of it? (Vital!) — enablement is huge, ensuring that education is of the utmost importance is key!

We use AI in monitoring our network for changes to baseline behavior by both machines and users.  Unlike signature based cyber tools, AI ensures that you are able to detect anomalies even if it has never been seen before.

How do you see AI benefiting IT departments and managed IT services provider in the future? Will it eliminate jobs or shift jobs in positions to work with AI?

Automation and data analytics are the major areas where we foresee a trend shift and usage of AI. 


I assume it will shift jobs to more human centric operations and might eliminate a few jobs but overall the productivity for an organization would definitely increase. 

How do you see AI benefiting IT departments and managed IT services provider in the future? Will it eliminate jobs or shift jobs in positions to work with AI?

The amount of cyber security products and services we now buy has changed my budget. It is never enough. Planning involves convincing others we need these services and they cost a lot less than a incident. Additionally I have started to think of desktop/laptop hardware as a service. No longer can I keep devices until they die. Again part of this is cyber security reason. But it has help get some devices on a refresh cycle. Without that departments wait too long to replace hardware and don’t like the price tag to replace. PCs as a service give department heads a consistent cost that makes budgeting easier for them.

Budget planning has changed markedly over the years. Hardware was the big ticket item software came second. With the pass of technology security and software innovation software has taken the brunt of expenditures. 
In addition we used to be reactionary now we plan out for the foreseeable future and try to acquire sufficient funds. Today planning is paramount to staying on top of an IT infer structure. 
IT is now considered an integral part of the organization and is part of the planning for change and innovation. We are no longer just a service but a vital component of any modern company.

It is becoming more continuous, though we are still doing annual budgeting but we realise more and more that this has challenges and we find ourselves in situations where either we have to put a hard limit on an initiative or a purchase due to no inclusion in the budget made an year ago or we run over. 

We try to keep a decent enough amount of contingency/buffer under different heads that indeed helps in situations of need.

Specifically for CIOs and CISOs, over the years the expenditure on Software has increased quite a lot and the ever expanding landscape of Security and technology is pushing the budgets.

IT budgeting requires reflection on the one hand on existing activities, and on the other on new IT projects to be implemented.

This should enable the management , the IT Services Department and the Administrative and Financial Department to build together a sustainable proposal for the IT function.

It will have to guarantee, according to the strategic orientations, a real contribution to the Business, a consideration of the expectations of the customers, a control of the costs and the processes, and without forgetting, an anticipation of the future.

The IT Department must manage and steer its budget in order to permanently play an active role in maintaining or creating value for the company. The IT budget is a budget that “infuses” the entire organization. Why has this become a strategic issue...

For me the evolution happened in stages and the context today is that the IT budget is divided into 2 parts: 1) Build and 2) Run


The build budget is co-owned/sponsored by the business/support functions who need the new systems. Thus the KPIs for success and the budget phasing is weaved in the business budget so that it reflects on the cost side (typically the implementation cost), licenses and hardware is capitalized. We review every quarter and provide cashflow forecasts to Finance which is available to all stakeholders.


The run budget is owned by the CIO/CTO and measure unit cost per transaction/customer/employee as the case may be and this number needs to stay steady or show a downward trend as volumes increase, efficiency is expected. This includes hardware, network, cloud, security, licenses including SaaS. Standardization and no exception policy helps in managing consistently. 


Exception items are dealt with on case to case basis along with other stakeholders. This has worked well in the last decade across different companies and industries. Contingencies are built into the numbers (typically 10%) and a small discretionary budget to experiment, explore and evaluate new technology as it comes across.

Big changes occurred reflecting the transformation of IT and CIO role from a Business enabler to Business driver. IT cost not only became a mandatory cost of surviving a business, but also keeping the business 's competitive advantage .  Nowadays it is not enough to prepare your budget (Capex, Opex ) but also you have to keep a generous portion for innovation and new R&amp;D in a shape of investment on startup and new disruptive technologies. Surely due to Cloud/SAS/PASS/LAS Capex spending reduced and more focus is on Cyber Security and innovations

While there is no right or wrong way to budget, there has definitely been a pendulum swing from CAPEX to OPEX over the last 4 four years as companies embraced the cloud. Some CIOs believe that makes it easier to reallocate funding requirements from what might have been earmarked for a data center into other areas. In 2022 however the ever-increasing cost of a multi-cloud/ hybrid cloud environment is being scrutinized for both business value (customer satisfaction) and ROI with the view that it might be better to repatriate some workloads due to cost of refactoring, cost of complexity or for increased security which is at the top of the need list for most CIOs.

Budget planning due to the move of infrastructure to the cloud and the use of SAAS systems is now more focused on OPEX than CAPEX. New accounting rules for the treatment of SAAS related work means that staff resources for projects that were previously treated as CAPEX have now changes to Opex.


So while the actual move to cloud infrastructure and SAAS if properly managed can lower overall costs it doesn't look that way when the OPEX budget has grown.


Cybersecurity tooling, training and staffing costs have all increased the cost base for an ICT team far beyond what it was in the past. Previously the costs were predominantly around Antivirus software and backups which were performed by normal ICT staff. Now there is significantly more tooling and monitoring required, often managed by hard to recruit specialised cyber security staff.

We have moved to rolling budgets and it makes it so much easier for forecasting and planning each year as you already have the budget ready before you need it. Projects are treated a little differently and managed as a project budget.
I always occasionally review the budget by taking a zero based approach and build up from there to ensure expenses are not continuing to creep up.
