I was one of the 14% of contrarians who don't use note taking apps. And I would like to explain why even though I beleive and defend note taking is both a personal learning style as well as a taught practice. 
I also realise that list and note taking is one of the major drivers of the app growth. But I also find, as a personal choice, that note taking is a relic of 20th century rationalism and I have found note taking (as well as email organisation and archiving) to be a business practice that is no longer capable (regardless of app) to find and recall knowledge with the velocity and context switching of the digital era.
In lieu of note taking and individual-control over classification, synthesis and retention I have for a few years now abandoned the practice in favour of leveraging SEARCH. As COMPUTE and LLMs enter the scene, the SEARCH capabilities have reached the point where I find there is simply no need to capture knowledge, organise mail, cultivate communities or record personal notes with rare exceptions.
Instead I rely on purpose-built or embedded technology to drive digital capability that is fit for the 21st century. And these are the digital capabilites I consider important, that we build toward, and shift user behaviour toward:

COMPUTE: The cloud helps us solve problems with a power that can scale up or down as needed and can be done from anywhere, by anyone in the ecosystem without worrying about where the data is.
CONNECT: Digital organisations enable members of an Ecosystem (both friend and foe) to publish and discover data and services to enable the flow of knowledge across the ecosystem for the benefit of all partners.
COLLABORATE: Digital solutions intelligently connect people, even across different communities by automatically making it easy to find and enter and connect to new communities and knowledge pools.
KNOWLEDGE CAPTURE: Digital organisations and platforms capture both formal information and also informal dialogue in such a way as to digest and propose relationship making and data connection across knowledge pools (via COMPUTE obviously)

These are only 4 of what I consider digital capability necessary for the 21st century but are at the heart of knowledge management.
I know I broadened the scope of the survey by taking the discussion to knowledge management, but I do see the change management effort in bringing people out of 20th century pen-to-paper individual archive knowledge management to the true potential of the era. No, I don't believe we are genetically constrained to 20th century models or that the printing press was the one technology innovation that humans (and humanist humans) finally achieved and can never evolve past.

I’m incredibly tactile. I hand write in notebooks. Almost everything is written down using quality paper and a nice pen. Thoughts during meetings. Summaries of conversations. A daily recap. When helpful I use the TurboScan app to scan and share the notes with others.

Which note taking app do you use at work?

The moment you switch from a single data center to a multi-DC setup, a lot of components and services you have will need to be re-architected to support it. Luckily, this is a known situation for many technologies and architectures, and the problem will probably be less about the target architecture, but rather how to evolve towards it and how to keep the costs at bay.


Before I list out technologies used here, keep in mind that this is a situation based on decennia of history and evolutions, and thus also based on constraints that might be specific to the company at hand. Newer designs or architectures can very well be possible, especially if you're starting from a non-separated architecture.


Network-wise, we use a software defined network technology (Cisco ACI, but others like NSX exist as well) to facilitate network design (including routing and switching). There, we try to have networks local to a data center, but with the possibility to switch over certain networks for disaster recovery reasons. We do also support so-called stretched networks, but we try to minimize this as much as possible as stretched environments have caused some challenges in our environment.


On top of that network, we generally use platforms or technologies with high degree of virtualization (be it VMware-based for the virtualization of regular servers and virtual appliances, or mainframe technology for the transactional parts). Depending on the non-functional requirements of the application, this compute resource can be hosted in a single DC with fail-over capabilities towards another, or use an active-active setup. In case of fail-over, we strongly rely on replicated storage (synchronous replication) - but this fail-over is mostly meant for disaster recovery, less for high availability - there are other means to facilitate that.


The application architecture is always a driving force for the deployment strategy. For instance, we do have database clusters that span across two data centers, but many applications can live with a database setup that is active in just one, with the ability for a recovery in the other in case of disasters. This provides a simpler database architecture, and often also simpler application architecture. But if needed, we do have database clusters (be it Oracle clustering technology, SQL Server clustering technology, or active/hot-standby cluster setups for PostgreSQL).

Hi. Not sure how silly this will sound, but, have the "basics" been covered?

E.g. Any chance of taking the opportunity for the Strategy allowing a journey into the cloud? I can guess a lot of legacy apps, but perhaps replatforming or rationalising the portfolio could be an opportunity driven by that transformation opportunity?

If there's no way around that decision, if it's a given that things must remain on prem and a multi-DC is the best way to go (I find it so hard not to have a business case that trumps doubling local infra, versus cloud, even if just IaaS), then from a data point of view, how much opportunity is there to adopt a distributed data management solution? How big is the business? How dependent is it on ETL? Data accessibility and reporting based on batch or near real time?

From an application architecture point of view, what's the most typical model. Verticals or platform based with loosely coupled layers? What about integration? File based? API enabled - point to point or orchestration and ESB type of management?


From a network point of view, what's the redundancy criteria you're applying? How far will those DC's be? Will you need tunneling between the sites? Can you afford MPLS? Or are you looking at SD WAN?

Apologies for returning with a lot more questions than simple answers with examples, but, really, depending on your context, you may need one thing or the other.

And I would definitely question once more if a journey into the cloud wouldn't suit the business needs better, from a PoC/RoI point of view.

As part of IT strategy, we are going to build a new data center to improve the system resilience, considering it's a multi-DC practice. Most of the bank systems are now running on a single DC. When it comes to multi-DC, before saying it's Active-Passive or Active-Active, we are having some issues in application architecture design, maintaining database or core banking consistency between multiples sites. I would appreciate if anyone can share the practice of multi-DC, what kind of technologies are being used in network, infrastructure, application, and database.

MultiDC which needs to incorporate the benefits of Active-A/A-Passive needs more of application architecture to be defined and implemented before the h/w side is designed. Infact the network/infra bits are simpler than the application and DB parts.
You could test these in smaller/agile ways using public cloud and implement similar on DC

We're ditching VMWare and switching to Proxmox by year's end.

We are in a similar situation where we have maintained support for perpetual licences annually, for years. Unfortunately for us, we have just hit the some key renewal dates and Broadcom have given us no other option than to move to an ELA - it is expensive!!!! We are actively moving to Microsoft Azure Stack, but are not far enough along for this to be our immediate answer. Genuinely feels like VMware/Broadcom are not interested in working with the customer and are forcing these licence changes.

We are a longtime VMWare customer and have maintain support for our perpetual license annually.  We have been told with the Broadcom acquisition that we will be forced to the subscription model and we should expect a large price increase.  We just renewed, so we have some time to plan.  I'm wondering what others have seen or are hearing around this.  If anyone has received their renewal, it would be great to hear some percentage of increase details.
