Evidence integrity — When loaded in a DEMS, digital artifacts are assigned a unique value through a hashing function. Artifacts can be examined at any time after loading to again obtain a hash value. Any alteration of the artifact will change the hash value from that originally obtained. The hashing function should be accompanied by a reporting feature to demonstrate integrity in court
Chain-of-custody tracking — Logging of all access to individual evidence items. This includes date, time, user and actions taken. Should provide the capability to produce chain-of-custody reports.
Support for multiple file types — Evidence will come in many formats (e.g., emails, text messages, photos, screenshots, video, audio, documents). The DEMS accommodates multiple formats.
Storage redundancy/types — Ability to back up data and store data in multiple locations, such as on-premises (network-attached storage), off-site, and cloud. To some degree, and particularly for SaaS, this may be accomplished through cloud zone and/or region replication.
Access control — System supports features like multifactor authentication (MFA) to control access.
