The world has changed, our customers wants and needs are changing, the tools we use to service our customer are changing.  Digital transformation is the reworking of our business to align to these changes.

For me it’s about moving from older, less modern technology to something that’s more relevant in current day. That could include iOT, but for me, cloud strategy, SaaS, using technology all apply to the category of digital transformation.

Changing how organisation works - ways of working. It also fundamentally is the change in the value chain for the company and from many aspects the digital transformation is essentially how digital solutions are integrating seamlessly to our everyday life

From a vendor, its a sales pitch, from management, usually its just a buzz-word they've heard from somewhere.

The world has changed, our customers wants and needs are changing, the tools we use to service our customer are changing.  Digital transformation is the reworking of our business to align to these changes.

It is all of those items and more.  It is not just about technology.  It is the transformation of the business to a more automated, faster pace, paperless, technology enabled business.  Tech is just one part of it.  And a tech transformation without the business on-board will have limited success.

To me, digital transformation is process of utilizing 'digital' technology to drive efficiency, automation and the acceleration of business. Example: From a collaboration and productivity standpoint, adopting a 'Dominating Ecosystem' like G Suite or Office 365 to reduce the daily friction of teammate collaboration (vs. disjointed best-of-breed tools).

Replacing or retirement of all old unsupported technologies with modern supported technology.   (Usually prefer SaaS with usage based licensing)

I see it as a series of iterative change that a business undertakes in order to shift their model.

And it has nothing to do with technology - that is only the enabler, not the outcome. 

It is aso requires pain - you don&#39;t make a butterfly by the sticking wings on a caterpillar.

A misnomer . Transformation is a process of change to foster value creation, and/or optimization  for improved cost effectiveness. This value based outcome may be enabled  by the use of digital technology.

Leveraging Information (electronic) and automation as an asset to grow a business or for cost optimization.  Not simply replacing with automation but gaining competitive advantage.

Phasing our old apps and ways of doing things and adopting new ways and perhaps new apps

I think about how Marketing organizations come up with vacuous catchphrases like &#34;digital transformation&#34; to justify their own existence.

Digital Transformation is creating processes using technology to be more efficient, less error prone and faster then are currently in place.  This can be both internal and external processes.  How companies work internally and work with other companies.  These could be already automated processes or current manual processes.  Part of digital transformation is integrating with the bigger ecosystem of technology.

Must be a little of all. AI, lowcode/nocode, paperless, if you go further Digital Transformation is tonapply all what you got in hand to solve and/or better solve daily processes

I use a more action oriented phrase:
“Continuous Innovation”

What do you think of when you hear the term "digital transformation"

When I joined Bayshore Networks, I was one of the founders on the tech side. At the time, the entire industrial internet of things (IIoT) space was in its infancy, but the underlying technologies had already been around for 30 years. That's a critical consideration because there was a lot of learning to be done there, especially from a communications protocol perspective.




We had to decipher these protocols that were designed for serial communications, not ethernet-based network communications. We were able to create this protocol-agnostic product that performs native protection for those devices at the protocol level. That was critical, because most products operated at the most generic level possible in order to sell to a larger population. But we wanted to solve a real problem. It meant a lot to us because something like a traffic light system is so important to protect. There's human life depending on that system. The engineering team believed that what we were doing was important to society. 




The industrial control system (ICS) devices that we dealt with are radically different from some of the consumer IoT devices that have come out, particularly in terms of their hardware resources, the communication protocols, and their actual protectability. With old PLCs, you can't even add security code to them because they don't have enough power to run it. When we were doing regular security scanning on a network of industrial devices from 20 years ago, we would end up knocking them off the network. That's how fragile those things are and they run our critical infrastructure, which is disturbing.




When we started getting involved in the commercial IoT space, we were dealing with familiar enterprise protocols, like CTP, FTP and STP. When you look at an old PoC and a new IoT device, they almost look like resources from the outside that are constrained on the same level. But they're not because hardware's come so far in terms of what's put into these devices. With older devices, it’s the same form factor, but what can you do with only 64K of memory? So protecting IIoT versus IoT requires different angles. Protecting PLCs for which you can't inject anything requires a network-centric approach. You want to catch bad actions at the protocol level. But for some of these new IoT devices, you want to do security at the host level because they have the ability to run that type of code. That doesn’t mean you wouldn't do network protection for them as well, but you have different options.

I don’t think there is a difference - or at least there shouldn’t be. Security in an industrial setting should be no different than in a home user/retail device. I think manufacturers and service providers sacrifice in security in non-industrial applications to save on cost, but this could be devastating to the product in the event of a large security failure.

I would like to think that there should be very little difference between industrial IoT devices and consumer grade IoT devices, but realistically, industrial devices NEED to be be more secure, and can be made more secure, just from the fact that industrial devices are set up by IT professionals (you'd hope) and consumer grade devices are not.

At the industrial level, there is also a whole underlying infrastructure and security environment that is in place that is managed and monitored by people whose job it is to keep an eye on these things.  At the industrial level, there are also far more serious consequences for breaches and hacks than there are for consumer devices.

What are the key differences between securing industrial internet of things (IIoT) devices and other IoT?

For us at GitLab we’re all remote and one of our biggest obstacles is to put what you’d normally consider basic security measures in a traditional brick and mortar world. We're in the process of getting an MDM product installed on laptops. Because of the very nature of open source and DevOps, a majority of the company is thinking about, “What data are you collecting and what is your responsibility around that data?”  With WFH, you're not just getting the IP address of their personal work laptop.  There’s the potential you’re getting other information on things in their environment. It's that real mashup of personal and work environment that makes it tricky.  How do you strike that balance, especially when you're trying to sell in the enterprise and you’ve got certain companies demanding you do certain security measures and track certain things? I don't have an answer. It is a really complicated problem and I think it’s just going to get worse. But there's going to be an opportunity for new solutions to help manage this stuff.   For example, cloud data products like DataBricks. It’s only going to get more and more complex, especially as these IoT devices have more compute power and become capable of doing so much more.

We’re going to have to figure out a way to let people view the data so that they feel comfortable about what’s being collected.  “I'm checking up on you about what you were checking up on me about.”  That's been a broad discussion at GitLab. If you can create that sort of environment, you'll actually have much better outcomes because a two-way trust will develop.
