Gartner defines network design as the optimization of the location and function of supply, manufacturing and distribution networks in support of an overarching company strategy and customer requirements. Supply chain network design tools support the creation of network models with the application of analytics to determine the optimal supply chain design in a structured, scalable and repeatable way. Supply chain network design tools support the determination of recommendations about the structure of the supply chain network. This includes decisions about facility locations and size, transport lanes, and modes in the end-to-end supply chain. The scale of the changes being evaluated vary from small modifications, such as changing a mode of transport or swapping transportation lanes, to large-scale changes that involve opening/closing/repurposing several facilities in the network and the associated knock on impacts. The use of supply chain network design tools to support the decision-making process enables companies to review more potential configurations for the network than a manual process allows, supporting a complete, data-driven decision making process. These decisions are usually made in strategic and tactical time frames.
"Partnering with Coupa: A Supply Chain Story"
I was first exposed to Coupa when I transitioned to Supply Chain almost two years ago. Since then I've worked with various Coupa support teams and they have all been very helpful and accommodating. We've worked on a range of things from training, to rebuilding models, to troubleshooting and demoing new technology. Each support team member always sought to provide the answers and solutions we were looking for and consistently leveraged their internal resources to ensure we were satisfied. But, as good as their support team is, I've been even more impressed by our current Customer Value Director. I met the rep awhile back and really connected with him this year when I took the lead on our company's Coupa relationship. Since then, he has gone above and beyond for us, even flying in to speak at our internal conference on short notice. We are in constant contact and he is always cheerful and accommodating. I value our partnership and look forward to exploring more of how we can utilize Coupa.
"Sophus: The Efficient Network Planning Tool with Notable Versatility"
Sophus is one of the best network planning tools available, being efficient, simple and easy to use. Sophus offers a wide range of functions, including network optimization, transportation optimization, inventory optimization, and much more. Through the built-in data import function, or linking to external databases, we can easily manage all the required model data. After setting model objectives and parameters, Sophus can quickly output the optimal solution. In addition, its customer service team provides considerable assistance in software deployment and operation. Their support team can always respond to software usage issues whenever needed. Some training sessions are also scheduled to help us get familiar with the newly updated features. All in all, Sophus stands out from the rest of the pack with its all-in-one versatility, ease of use, and responsive customer team.
"From model research to production without hiccups"
The FICO team is totally fantastic to work with. They support and guide us in any issue we encounter (rare) in a very timely manner providing dedicated point of contacts in the respective dev teams that support the specific package application.

AIMMS is an easy-to-learn supply chain network design software that has helped my organization answer a wide range of strategic questions, from simple center of gravity outputs to a greenfield-type design. I would like to add that easy-to-learn does not mean that the level of granularity is not deep or accurate enough; AIMMS provides both as we are currently in the process of implementing some of the initiatives we studied using AIMMS. From a support perspective, we started our journey with AIMMS with a Proof of Concept where we provided most of the data and they did the heavy lifting with the model prep. Then, for a different model, we started doing all the modeling while having weekly meetings with AIMMS for support for 2-3 months. My team and I are now fully capable of modeling on our own and we send emails to their support desk or organize quick calls if we have any questions. We've also had some proposed additions to the data input template, which were implemented within a couple months, so it's important to note that AIMMS certainly listens to their customers' feedback.
