What are Supply-Side Platforms for Retail Media Networks?

Gartner defines supply-side platforms for retail media networks as a combined set of capabilities that facilitate the creation, management and optimization of retailers’ advertising inventory through leveraging automation, artificial intelligence and integration. Platforms bring together core retail media network (RMN) functionalities to offer third-party advertisers, like consumer packaged goods (CPGs) and brands, the capabilities to showcase relevant products at any phase of the customer shopping process across a retailer’s digital and/or physical properties.

Retailers use supply-side platforms (SSPs) to set up retail media networks (RMNs). RMNs provide higher margins compared with low-margin activities associated with the sale of physical products, subject to business model and competitive pressures. SSPs for RMNs enable the automation and optimization of advertising operations at scale, making the management and sales of ad inventory less expensive, more efficient and faster.
