The features which i like most in the Akamai API security is its API discovery or unmanaged endpoints and the threat protection for the API endpoints based on the behavior analysis.
The API discovery of this feature is huge. It makes troubleshooting possible security incidents very easy. Another feature that is great is the alerting and flexibility with how that can be configured. They really seemed to put a lot of time into that part of the platform. Finally the product does a really good job at detecting issues and making sure it's clear which ones need attention immediately.
The main challenges with Akamai's API securtiyt is the initial setup and tuning which can be comple and time consuming, especially when defining policies for diverse APIs, alert noise can also be high until proper baselining is acheived, and reporiting customization could be more flexible for specific business or compliance needs.
It does not support the API gateway and business logic protection in the endpoints. Cost is another factor as it is high. No options to use or integrate with other CDN.
Since this platform has many configuration options it can be challenging to figure out where to go to do certain things. That being said there are great tutorials on how to use it and get around those challenges. Sometimes there can be false positives like any tool but the platform has a way to learn based on user input so it gets better with time. The product sometimes can have so much information that it can be challenging to handle all of the issues, the platform does show which are what severity so that helps with this.
