EBS is excellent IAAS but users need to understand their IO profile quite well. Usually, in majority of typical workload it works well but when you move to mission critical, with heavy IO activities with large through put, then need fine tuning to achieve best outcom

The snapshot feature works perfectly. it is very useful to replicate volumes across regions. Its ability to resize volume without downtime is a major plus.

Convert to different type of EBS based on need of your IO workload, great performance matrix dashboard with resolution up to 2 minute. Easy to setup, increase on-demand and cost optimization

Data on EBS volumes is duplicated within the same AZ to provide maximum availability and durability.

The only thing i dislike is the cost associated with an EBS volume, especially with high performance volumes like io2.

Not able to see if there is demand profile in clear way, need storage expertise to understand and analyze.

Performance may suffer amid network congestion or while running on a burstable volume type (e.g., GP2).

I have been using EBS volumes for over 5 years now and it has proved to be good for us. The volumes are quite reliable and highly available. Data loss is prevented as data can be replicated to different AZ's and also data is secure as it is encrypted while at rest or in transition. It also gives you the flexibility to format in specific file systems, OS and apps. The option to choose between an SSD and HDD is also a good feature to sign up for. The best part is you are not paying upfront for these volumes as it used to be in traditional systems. We pay only for what we consume.

Highly useful service as it works as a detachable SSD which can be used to multiple Instances with multiple default and customizable policies to create point in time snapshots / backups as per the convenience also the various types of storage types / block types such as gp2 , gp3 , io1 etc. which gives the user options to choose from as per their convenience.
