Updated 13th October 2025

What is Amazon API Gateway?

Amazon API Gateway is a software that enables developers to create, publish, maintain, monitor, and secure APIs at any scale. The software allows for the management of REST, HTTP, and WebSocket APIs, supporting the connection of backend services such as AWS Lambda functions, web applications, or other AWS resources. It provides features such as traffic management, authorization and access control, monitoring, and API version management. “Strong Performance And Security, With Challenges In Advanced Feature Setup”

4.0
Apr 28, 2026
We have been using AWS API Gateway to manage and expose our backend services where it provides a scalable and reliable way to handle API traffic, with seamless integration across other AWS services like Lambda, Cloudwatch and IAM significantly simplifies building secure and event-driven architectures. This performs well under all scenarios. There is a slight learning curve around the configurations. One of the most valuable aspects is its ability to handle request throttling, authentication and monitoring, which reduces the need for additional infrastructure. Performance is consistent, and the platform scales automatically without manual intervention. Overall. Amazon API Gateway is a robust, enterprise-grade API management solution that is well-suited for modern cloud-native applications. Despite minor complexities in setup and cost optimization, it delivers strong performance, scalability and integration capabilities.

Seamless Serverless Application Deployment Using Lambda and IAM With API Gateway

    5.0
    May 3, 2026
I have been using Amazon API Gateway for a while now and honestly; it's been a pretty solid experience overall. Setting up, publishing and managing APIs is straightforward once you get the hang of it, and the best part is you don't have to worry too much about the infrastructure side of things. Connecting it with Lambda, IAM, and Cloud Watch feels natural and it makes building a fully serverless setup much less painful than I expected. Things like throttling, caching and built in monitoring are genuinely useful day to day, not just features that look good on paper.

Seamless AWS Integration and Scalability With Some Setup Complexity

    4.0
    May 23, 2026
My experience has been positive. API Gateway is a great tool that provides a fully managed way to create, publish, and secure APIs at scale without worrying about infrastructure. Integration with other AWS services like Lambda, IAM and CloudWatch work seamlessly, which makes it a strong choice for serverless architectures. However, configuration can feel complex at times, and debugging issues isn't always straightforward, especially for new users.

Performance of Amazon API Gateway Across Market Features

Amazon API Gateway Likes & Dislikes

Like

The standout strengths of Amazon API Gateway are: Seamless AWS Integration: It integrates natively with services like AWS Lambda, IAM, and Cloudwatch making it easy to build secure, serverless and event-driven architectures without additional tooling. Built-in Security and Traffic Management: Features such as request throttling, rate limiting, AOI keys and IAM-based authentication provide strong control over API access and protect against abuse without requiring extra infrastructure. Automatic Scaling and High Availability: The service handles scaling automatically based on incoming traffic, ensuring consistent performance and reliability even during peak loads

Like

Within a few clicks, you can have a fully configured API, and you only get charged for what you use. It's intuitive and simple.

Like

It has seamless AWS integration which works effortlessly with Lambda, IAM and cloud watch, making it easy to build and manage serverless applications. It offers strong security authentication, authorization and traffic control features to keep APIs safe and well protected. It provides clear visibility into API performance, making it easier to spot and troubleshoot issues.

Dislike

Complexity involved in configuring advanced features, particularly around IAM roles, authorization mechanisms and request/response transformations Debugging and troubleshooting can also be challenging as the error messages are not always very descriptive Certain customizations and integrations may require additional configuration effort compared to some dedicated API management platforms, which can slow down initial development

Dislike

While the pay per use model makes it easy to start and great for small companies, scaling up increases the cost more than you'd expect. On top of some other unexpected complexities and being locked in to AWS, the product is easy to start but requires careful consideration before committing long term.

Dislike

Pricing models can get complicated and expensive at scale, particularly for API handling with high volumes of traffic. Troubleshooting can be frustrating due to limited error transparency and logs being scattered across multiple services making it harder to pinpoint issues quickly. Beginners may find it overwhelming at first as setting up configuration, integration and policies takes time and effort to fully understand.
