NGinx Plus is an All-in-One complete platform for Application delivery, hosting and security. It consists of a web server, forward and reverse proxy, API gateway and load balancer. NGinx also has a Web Application Firewall that protects applications from OWASP Top 10 threats, but as a separate license. NGinx also comes as Open Source, however with NGinx Plus comes a commercial version with premium support from F5. F5 has a line of distributors and partners that provide NGinx Plus with managed service. NGinx is mainly designed for Linux based OS and can be installed as On-Premise version or can be used over cloud.

NGinx Plus has been gaining importance these days because it is very lightweight and provides major performance enhancement when it comes to CPU and memory utilization. Hosting of websites and web applications is very easy and secure. NGinx can serve static content, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, images, and videos, very efficiently. Multiple websites can be hosted using its virtual host feature. NGinx web server can also be used as a reverse proxy, forward proxy, load balancer, mail proxy and HTTP cache. You can host a web application built in Java, Php, Python, Perl, Go and Ruby. We have been using NGinx Plus for hosting our Java based web app and also we are using its WAF services along with its DDOS clean pipe solution.

Application delivery features along with integration with Azure, Aws etc. Its ability to withstand as a self-contained solution in this space and deliver apps with speed, scale and security.

NGinx Plus is a great platform. It has a CLI based interface for installation purposes. The main benefit of using NGinx as a web server is that it is very light weight and provides a very good performance. The platform is stable and reliable. The commands for installation and configuration are available directly on their website and are easy to use. Further, the website can be hosted and configurations can be managed easily. The load balancer distributes the web traffic load easily and the resource consumption is very optimal. NGinx Plus not only includes API security and management, it also has a WAF component available for protection from OWASP top 10 threats.

NGinx Plus is a very useful platform and there are no dislikes for it. It used to have a command line interface earlier, however F5 has now come up with a Graphical user interface and all the modules can be accessed and configured directly from this interface. NGinx is mainly designed for Linux based Operating Systems and cannot be installed on a Windows environment. NGinx Plus support has been great with the F5 tech team. NGinx is used as a reverse proxy to provide load balancing services to deliver a smooth web experience and to enforce web application security. NGinx is used for deploying Micro Services based applications and supports devops very efficiently.

Steep learning curve for beginners, many features are locked inside paid version even to test, availability on certain platform.

One limitation of NGinx Plus is that it is available only for Linux flavours like Unix, AIX, Ubuntu and so on. It is not available for Windows OS. Secondly, NGinx has recently come up with the GUI panel, earlier it used to be only a CLI based interface. NGinx is very DevOps friendly, hence it is easy to deploy monolithic as well as micro-services based applications. NGinx can be installed as an On-Premise setup or it can be used as a SaaS based service. The support provided by F5 is great and the ticket resolution TAT is good.

NGinx Plus, now part of NGinx One, is a unified platform for application delivery that includes a web server for hosting, load balancers for load distribution, reverse and forward proxy, API security and content caching. NGinx Plus provides a management console to manage all these mentioned services. Being a full package, we are using NGinx Plus for TechRefresh for one of our applications. NGinx Plus is a product by F5 and their support is very good. The license for the same can be procured through their partners along with the managed services. Free trials are available and they can even provide you with live demos for better understanding of the product.
