Product Information on IBM MQ

Updated 13th October 2025

What is IBM MQ?

IBM MQ is a messaging software that enables secure and reliable exchange of data between applications, systems, and services across diverse computing environments. The software offers message queuing capabilities, supporting both point-to-point and publish-subscribe models, to facilitate communication regardless of differences in operating system, programming language, or network infrastructure. IBM MQ helps address business challenges related to integrating heterogeneous systems and ensuring the assured delivery of transactional information. Its features include message encryption, guaranteed message delivery, transaction support, and scalability, which contribute to reducing operational risk, improving connectivity between processes, and supporting compliance needs in enterprise environments.

IBM MQ Pricing

IBM MQ software uses a subscription-based and perpetual licensing pricing model. Pricing varies depending on deployment options such as on-premises, cloud, and containerized environments. Charges may be based on processor value units, resource usage, or by the number of messages processed. Enterprise and standard editions are available, with additional costs for support and advanced features.

Update to Version 9.4.1-r1 Streamlines Business Management and Personalization

The experience has been very good both in theory and in use/practice. We have managed to upgrade to version 9.4.1-r1 with all the customization that we had in the company with the previous version. In use with day-to-day processes it has been very satisfactory since when the version was migrated, applications connected automatically and began to use the queues and queue manager pointing to the same DNS.

IBM MQ Likes & Dislikes

Like

Scalability and flexibility to deploy more than one instance, I found interesting the new functionalities such as the use of operators and having the administration console where you can see many of the functionalities such as the one that through the operator allows the management of the Queue Managers without having a manual administration of Kubernetes resources within Openshift, thus reducing the possibility of errors and streamlining management

Dislike

The initial setup/configuration has room for improvements. Monitoring and reporting have gaps compared to the competition. There is no concept of bridging from topic to queues and even though there is a subscriber option it introduces more issues when exploring that option.
