What is Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric is a data analytics software that integrates multiple tools for data integration, data engineering, data warehousing, data science, real-time analytics and business intelligence into a single platform. The software supports connectivity across sources and provides a unified experience for data preparation, transformation and modeling. Microsoft Fabric enables organizations to store, manage and analyze data from various sources by offering access to lakehouse architecture, semantic models and reporting features. “Data Consolidation Supports Decision-Making Despite Costs and Geographic Restrictions”

As the company moves forward we have multiple systems with data in them, fabric is allowing us to put all this data into the platform to allow us to query the data to make decisions based on the past and help predict the future such as customer orders or a commodity price change etc, we would also look into getting AI to query the data as well in the end.

Microsoft Fabric Likes & Dislikes

Like

easy to use easy to get data into easy to query data a lot of functionality within the Microsoft environment that we can use with fabric

Like

Centralised location for interacting with and developing with the product

Like

Ease of connecting to Azure SQL products and Power BI. Billing goes through Azure where reservations can be applied or the service can be paused to stop charges when not in use.

Dislike

sometimes the admin can be harder than it should be costs can be costly as well the restrictions on the UK regions on fabric

Dislike

Some functionality available in older products (Data Factory, for example) slow to be released Lag in behind-the-scenes metadata meaning simple tasks like deletes sometimes flaky Too many features still in preview

Dislike

Certain data types are not yet compatible in Data warehouses etc. Monitoring usage can be hard to see a clear picture, the usage is shown in a PowerBI app where it will often show background use and its not generally clear what its doing, unlike using a server where task manager will show everything. Lacks some features of SQL Server making query tuning challenging. To give any users access they must have Entra logins within the environment.

What Your Peers Are Saying About Microsoft Fabric

VP of IT
Does any of you have any material or context around Microsoft Fabric and/or operational frameworks that every BI Team should be embracing? Two separate topics. Fabric discussions will help us navigate this new environment. Framework discussions will help identify any risks or gaps in our team structure/vision.
CIO
It's a unified platform combining data integrations, engineering, science and BI with deep Power BI Integration. It's perfect for breaking silos between teas, using OneLake for centralized data, and leveraging AI-powered tools like Copilot for insights. Start by exploring its use for your lakehouse needs and upskilling yout team on its features. For BI framework (Operational), focus on Agile practices for delivery, strong data governance, clear KPI's for team success and risk management strategies. Regular training and centralized documentation keep the team aligned and resilient. Both topics are collaboration and ensuring a setup for scalable and efficient growth.

We observed Microsoft Fabric is a emerging data platform in the Market. Can you recommend any comparisons done between Microsoft Fabric and other data platform product in AWS, Databricks or Google?
Director of IT
https://www.chaosgenius.io/blog/microsoft-fabric-vs-databricks/ is one comparison.  Probably others can be found.  Also consider using some GenAI engines to generate at least the initial content to work from.

    Fabric- an evolving data evnironment

    4.0
    Aug 13, 2025
Fabric offers good integration with MS SQL ecosystem / Azure and PowerBI, and appears to be a good replacement for older technologies. There are some drawbacks, with functionality being a fairly new product it lacks some features existing products offer such as RowVersion as a data type isn't yet compatible for example. However, new features are being added frequently, often addressing issues i have previously had.

Leveraging Microsoft Fabric for Reliable Data Extraction from SAP Systems

    5.0
    Jun 4, 2025
Microsoft Fabric is very integrated with each service even prev. product. Our primary objective in adopting Azure Data Factory was to establish a unified orchestration layer for managing enterprise-wide data integration from SAP, MES, many local systems and MS Dynamics. To meet this goal, we leveraged a 3rd-party SAP connector integrated into ADF via a self-hosted integration runtime. This setup allowed us to reliably extract delta data from SAP without building complex logic in both SAP and ADF. Generally, this platform enables centralized governance and automation across the global pipeline. Building on the previous setup, Fabric Data Factory makes it easier to create pipelines and improves integration with tools like Power BI.

Migrating to Fabric Data Factory Enhances Productivity with Local Ownership

    5.0
    Jun 2, 2025
Our original goal was to process and standardize OT data from multiple factory systems with Azure Data Factory. ADF provided the flexibility needed for complex ETL logic, but it was too specialized for shop-floor engineers to maintain or adjust pipelines on their own Fabric Data factory makes pipeline authoring far more intuitive and deepens integration with business facing tools such as Power BI. The migration has markedly improved our responsiveness to real-time operational needs and boosted productivity. both in development speed and in how quickly insights reach decision-makers.
