Container Management Reviews and Ratings

What is Container Management?

Gartner defines container management as offerings that enable the deployment and operation of containerized workloads. Delivery methods include stand-alone software or as a service. Delivery methods include cloud, managed service and software for containers running on-premises, in the public cloud and/or at the edge. Container management automates the provisioning, operation and life cycle management of containerized workloads at scale. Centralized governance and security policies are used to manage container workloads and associated resources. Container management supports the requirements of modern applications (also refactoring legacy applications), including platform engineering, cloud management and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. Benefits include improved agility, elasticity and access to innovation.

"Powerful container orchestration developed by Google for GCP"

Kubernetes is a well known orchestration tool and a cluster management for containers like Docker containers. Google Kubernetes Engine is the managed Kubernetes service provided by Google to use in the Google Cloud and it utilizes the Google Infrastructure. It is easy to use if we are aware and familiar with Kubernetes engine. There are two types of cluster types provided in GKE. The first is autopilot cluster where the scaling of the containers is done automatically by the cluster depending on the usage and limits set. The second is standard cluster which requires manual administration and manual intervention to scale up or down. I have been using GKE to host confluent kafka, schema registry, ksqldb components and it has been very easy to manage and orchestrate those containers. The cluster can be easily integrated with the other GCP components like App Engine services, cloud run services etc.

"Unpacking Azure Kubernetes Service: Intuitive Design Meets Robust Functionality"

Azure Kubernetes Service is the container orchestration tool developed for Azure. I have been using it for a while now and I feel that it is pretty simple to setup clusters of containers. The service takes care of the scaling and the maintenance of the nodes. The UI is pretty intuitive and gives a depth of knowledge about all the pods existing within the cluster and also specifies the cluster ips being used by those pods and also the external ips if they are set. It is easy to integrate with other Azure services like Azure functions, serverless services, cloud services etc. It is also possible to setup a custom DNS provider for the Kubernetes cluster. It can also be setup within a subnet of a VNET if the traffic has to be restricted internally or within the services under the same VNET.

"Think Enterprise App Containerization, think RedHat OpenShift"

Since this is the only true enterprise level container orchestrator, it beats most of the other brand names out there that focuses more on lightweight containerization. What Open Shift excels at in comparison is the host of functions that comes with it out of the box without having to integrate much with othet devops tools for CICD.
