Infrastructure management and scalability: Astro eliminates the complexity of manually scaling Airflow nodes and databases (thanks to managed Kubernetes-based deployment). Astro CLI: makes the development, local testing, and CI/CD cycle extremely rapid, standardized, and frictionless for programmers. Finally, integrated lineage and data observability: thanks to native integration with OpenLineage, it offers immediate visibility into dataset dependencies and downstream impacts.

Getting started with Astro is not easy. The setup process assumes a lot of technical knowledge that not everyone has, especially in a research setting. The documentation does not do enough to bridge that gap, and it can take a while before the tool feels manageable. It is the kind of product that rewards patience, but that patience is not always available.
