Features of Higher Education Learning Management Systems

Mandatory Features:

  • Security/user administration — This enables platform security, managing of users, role assignment and role-based permissions, and auditing of platform access and authentication

  • Course management — This includes the ability for instructors to organize course content and create custom learning paths for learners. It includes the capability to manage and deliver various types of course assets, including multimedia, interactive activities and assessments

  • Learning resource management — These are capabilities for managing and delivering a range of learning resources, including videos, simulations, e-books and other digital materials

  • Integration/APIs — It must provide integration with other systems and tools commonly used in higher education (e.g., student information system, plagiarism tools, accessibility tools, e-portfolio). Also, APIs should be provided for custom integrations and extensions to third-party tools

  • Communication and collaboration — This contains or allows for integration with tools for communication and collaboration between learners and instructors. These tools may include discussion forums, web conferencing, chat and messaging that enable learners to interact and engage with course content and each other

  • Reporting — This includes reporting capabilities to track learner progress and performance with features such as gradebooks, assessment analytics and learner engagement metrics that allow instructors to monitor learner progress, identify at-risk learners and provide timely feedback

  • Customization — It must allow for a personalized look and feel to align with institutional, department, instructor and/or learner needs. This includes capabilities, such as adaptive learning, that adjust course content based on learner performance

  • Mobile capability — It must provide a mobile-compatible platform that enables access to course content and resources from mobile devices
