Sakai contains the primary tools necessary for course organization; however, it is very old and discouraging to navigate.  It does the job, but the experience is not very pleasant and the efficiency of the actions taken is questionable.

On the positive side there was the flexibility of open source and the collaborative aspects of the work; however, the problems with the gradebook and lack of compatibility with other systems caused more problems than it solved. It was simply too complicated and involved too much effort, as well as experiencing negative effects on efficiency.

The Apereo Foundation is committed to aiding educational organizations that collaborate to promote, cultivate, and maintain open technologies and innovation for enhancing learning, teaching, and research. It gives an organizational structure for open source software projects and communities in higher education. Established in 2012, Apereo is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization which emerged from the fusion of Jasig, Inc and the Sakai Foundation, both of which shared equivalent goals and communities.

The core mission of the Apereo Foundation is to assist and facilitate educational organizations which collaborate to foster, develop, and sustain open technologies and innovation to support learning, teaching, and research. Apereo provides a common organizational umbrella for higher education open source software projects and communities. 

Apereo is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization, and was formalized in 2012 as the merger of Jasig, Inc and the Sakai Foundation, which both had similar missions and communities.
