Product: SAP Intelligent Asset Management

Powerful ERP integration comes with steep setup costs and complexity

What I like most about SAP Intelligent Asset Management is that it gives structure to a very complicated operating environment: 1. Stronger visibility of critical assets across multiple sites One of the biggest strengths is the ability to maintain a clearer view of critical assets across different manufacturing locations. We have complicated production assets, utility systems, process equipment, and lab-related equipment that all play a role in quality and production continuity. Having a more organized asset structure helps us understand where assets are located, what their history looks like, what maintenance has been performed, and where recurring issues may exist. 2. Better maintenance history and traceability The maintenance history is very valuable when it is used correctly. In quality management, we often need to understand whether an equipment issue could have contributed to a production concern, test result issue, delay, deviation, or customer-impacting event. Being able to review maintenance activity, equipment history, corrective work, and repeated failures gives us better traceability and helps support more fact-based decisions. 3. Supports proactive maintenance and risk-based conversations The system helps move the organization away from purely reactive maintenance. In our process, waiting until equipment fails can create a chain reaction. It may affect raw material processing, intermediate product quality, lab testing schedules, finished goods release, or customer delivery. SAP Intelligent Asset Management supports earlier discussion around equipment condition, risk, and maintenance priorities, which is very important in a high-maintenance manufacturing environment.

Extremely excessive implementation complexity, absolutely nothing is nicely out of the box configurable. You need a team of experts to spin up a simple MVP. It also has a very rigid/unintuitive UI, simple tasks like searching or sorting requires clicking through multiple menus. The fees are also quite high, and significantly above what other competitors charge, we basically pay a massive enterprise premium for capabilities that require massive internal work to create and maintain.
