The Illuminate Student Information System is a decent student information system. The biggest roadblock right now is that there is no robust reporting available, so we can't generate the kinds of reports we need to accurately track student progress.

This review is from the perspective of a system integrator and developer.  I have considerable experience servicing the technical side and working with their staff and platform to implement data integration, API access, and login integration.  We have integrated Illuminate with our primary SIS which is Aeries.

I manage the data feed from Aeries into Illuminate.  This data feed is facilitated by a Windows executable extract program that is provided by Illuminate.  The program connects to our local Aeries SQL server and extracts information into tab-delimited flat files, then it uploads those files to their FTP server.  The program works very well and I have never had problems with it.  Many vendors leave the customer to develop their own integrations, but Illuminate is good enough to provide their own pre-made integration.

I have also worked with Illuminate to implement their API.  Because Illuminate is a hosted platform we don't have direct SQL access.  Their API documentation was easy to follow and I was able to implement it using PHP.  Once the API was implemented I found it to be very slow for certain endpoints but fast with others.  I also found inconsistencies with the returned data which I reported as bugs.  Ultimately the performance issues and inconsistent data made the API not very usable for our purposes.

Last year I worked with their support to setup SSO using a Google SAML app.  Their support staff was very helpful and willing to work with me on this custom app.  Unfortunately after lots of troubleshooting we weren't able to get it working, and at a certain point they stopped responding.

Lastly, overall uptime has been great the last 4 years with the one exception of Spring 2018 when their platform was temporarily down during online testing.
