Gartner defines network detection and response (NDR) as products that detect abnormal network behaviors by applying behavioral analytics to network traffic data. NDR products continuously analyze raw network packets or traffic metadata within internal networks (east-west) and between internal and external networks (north-south). They include automated responses, such as host containment or traffic blocking, implemented directly or through integration with other cybersecurity products. Vendors deliver NDR as hardware or software appliances for sensors, with some supporting IaaS environments. Management and orchestration consoles are available as software or SaaS. We have been using Hillstone's NDR, also known as Hillstone Breach Detection System (BDS), for the past two years. Our environment includes multiple sites and critical servers, so we needed a solution to monitor internal network traffic for advanced threats. We deployed on-premises appliance monitoring key network segments. Initial deployment was moderately complex and involved multiple steps, but Hillstone's team assisted with setup and provided training. Within a few weeks, the system was integrated into our network, feeding alerts into our SOC workflow. We now use it continuously for real-time network monitoring, and incident response support.
