It's done a very impressive job of remaining current and useful, but is really losing ground to more modern headless CMSs with decoupled front ends. I use wordpress to create many types of websites. Usually I install on a linux webserver. First I create a database and then I copy the wordpress files and folder on my webserver, configure the web address and then I launch the install (easy and quick). Choose a strong username and password to login to wordpress. 
First choose a theme; some theme are better than others, depending on the kind of website you are going to create. Many features in themes and plugins may be not free, just check before install and activate them.
You can create your templates (e.g. header and footer) for better website customization.
If you install a website builder plugin, creating your pages will be easier.
You can always have  a look on how your website will be displayed on tablet and smartphone, and adjust sizes (you can also hide some part of the website).
Remember to set permalink "with the name of the page" as the default choice is not "really appealing".
There are a lot of effect to make your webpage more appealing, many of them are free. I must say: Enjoy Wordpress!
