Data and Analytics Governance Platforms
Atlan is a metadata platform designed to cater to the needs of data-driven teams. The system unifies metadata from diverse sources such as Snowflake, dbt, Databricks, Looker, Tableau, Postgres and others, consolidating them into a single source of truth for data discovery, cataloging, lineage, and governance. This platform covers all types of data assets, like columns, queries, metrics and dashboards. One of Atlan’s fundamental features is promoting the bi-directional movement of metadata, fostering a seamless, context-enriched operational environment for data teams across their regular toolsets and workflows. For instance, this feature could be beneficial when clarifying metrics on a dashboard within a BI tool.

- Data Warehouse integrations make it relatively simple to import data into the catalog and map relationships - User Interface is intuitive, making it easy for people in the organization to onboard to popular functionality with little guidance - Data assets have an extensible, customizable data model that allows them to work flexibly with some of our unique use cases and internal tool integrations. Their highly capable API helps us maintain that data model
That is a colaborative tool so everybody can pitch in to add information about all the data and it has a great overall view and the ability to drill through the information on each data piece, add external sources and include information about data quality and freshness.
It is easy to navigate, even for non-technical users, quite easy to understand and the amount of data inside of it about all schemas&tables makes it essential for my daily work.
- Catalog of available data connectors covers most of our data stack, but some of our BI tooling isn't supported - In some cases, the UI doesn't reflect back-end changes quickly, leading to the catalog feeling sluggish after performing some operations
The learning curve for new users is a bit steep Some features are cost driven, so you have to pay for stuff like AI It has some limits in workflow customization
When managed poorly, it might not return any required data about data type, owners, refresh cadence etc. It lacks some additional info about data owners contact points for some older, unused tables.
