“ADF is a mature solution with options”

ADF is a solid solution that we use as an alternative mostly when file-based pipelines are not well aligned with the pricing model of our standard product. Because its pricing is primarily compute-based, ADF allow us to implement these pipelines at a lower cost while remaining consistent with our industrialization standards. It also offers a many flexibility allowing pipeline customization through a wide range of built-in connectors as well custom code if necessary.

“Learning Curve Challenges for Healthcare Researchers Using Azure Data Factory Tools”

3.0
May 13, 2026
I came across Azure Data Factory while exploring data tools that could work for clinical research. Honestly, it's impressive — but it felt like it wasn't made for someone like me. I'm a PT researcher, not a data engineer, and that gap showed pretty quickly.

Performance of Azure Data Factory Across Market Features

Azure Data Factory Likes & Dislikes

Like

The product is mature and supports data transformation through a wide range of available connectors. It supports advanced pipeline customization with multiple configuration options. Its computed-based cost model can, in some cases be more advantageous than pricing based on data volumes or row counts.

Like

It plays really nicely with other Microsoft tools I already use Excel, Power BI, Teams. That familiarity was comforting. Also, once things are set up, the automation is genuinely useful data moving on its own without me having to babysit it. I can see how powerful this would be for a large hospital network managing patient data across multiple sites or for large trials in a future research setting.

Like

The visual nature is easy to view and understand, even by non-technical teams. Pipelines can be created and templated very easily and results can be produced quickly, and then optimised once they have been prototyped. The speed of processing was sufficient for our data needs.

Dislike

Implementing conditional logic within activity execution can quickly become complex or even not possible sometimes. The level of sub-pipeline nesting is fairly limited, which restricts flexibility. In addition, the way resources are managed during pipeline execution can reveal limitations when higher performance levels ar required. Most of the connectors do not support native CDC ( Change Data Capture )

Dislike

The learning curve hit hard. If you do not have an IT or engineering background, you will feel lost pretty fast. For smaller research projects it honestly feels like overkill. There's very little out there specifically for healthcare researchers the documentation assumes you already know what you're doing.

Dislike

Change data capture takes a long time to set up and configure, and is not automatically. It must be repeated for each. Some rare errors can be confusing and refuse to work until a server or runtime is restarted or reinstalled, with no clear reason as to what failed.
