We have evaluated several products. The user interface of Cortex is the most intuitive, clean and easy to use. The extensibility, both in terms of injecting custom data as well as custom UI plugins, is really powerful. The scorecards module powered by CQL is outstanding, and the tool supports numerous out of the box integrations. Supports GitOps which we use a lot.
Scorecards for governance, Workflows for scalable automation and Engineering Intelligence for insights.
- Proprietary and Non-transferable DSL: Developers must learn CQL (Cortex Query Language), a unique Domain Specific Language (DSL) that is exclusive to Cortex. Unlike widely adopted languages such as SQL or the JSON standard, JQ and CQL syntax has no application outside the Cortex environment. - Areas for Eventing Architecture Improvement: The platform was fundamentally architected around REST Services and Polling, not modern Event-driven models, which represents an architectural weakness in handling Eventing. - Integration Throttling due to Rate Limiting: Cortex's API calls, which are necessary for generating reports, can sometimes overwhelm and trigger rate limits on your underlying tools (e.g., GitHub's API). This consequence can lead to the integration platform throttling its operations or hanging entirely.
Implementation of our Golden Paths vision using workflows module is one area we somewhat struggled at the beginning. However, the team at Cortex is working quite hard to enhance the workflows module, we already see a lot of improvements which is allowing us to implement complex use cases. Another improvement we would like to see is the ability to create custom reports for executives. While the product is mainly for the developers, leaders across the engineering organization at various levels also expect insights. The out of the box reports such as the bird's eye report are very helpful, but at times we also felt the need for custom reports but this is not possible at the moment which meant we needed to resort to PowerBI dashboards for executive reports.

Our experience rolling out Cortex as a platform for improving developer experience has been very positive. Cortex helped bring visibility and standardization to our engineering ecosystem. The platform enables teams to define ownership, establish and improve compliance with our security, resiliency, quality and SDLC practices standards. The plugins and extensive out of the box integrations helped us to catalog our tech stack and bring bring visibility to our engineering community. As we continue to mature our usage, we are hoping to improve the usage of cortex through their engineering excellence and scaffolding features.
