Market Presence: Container Management, Hybrid Cloud Storage

Overview

Product Information on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)

Updated 13th October 2025

What is Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)?

Google Kubernetes Engine is a software that provides managed Kubernetes services for automating the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. The software offers features including cluster management, integrated monitoring, automatic scaling, and load balancing. It supports multi-zone and multi-region clusters, allowing for high availability and reliability of applications. The software aims to solve business problems related to infrastructure management, resource optimization, and rapid application deployment by streamlining operations and simplifying maintenance for organizations leveraging containers in cloud environments.

Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Pricing

Google Kubernetes Engine software uses a pay-as-you-go pricing model based on resources consumed such as compute instances, storage, and network usage. Charges apply for cluster management, each node, and additional services, with options for different node machine types and regional clusters to adjust pricing according to resource allocation.

“Anthos Enhances Hybrid Cloud Management But Presents Initial Setup Challenges”

Aug 29, 2025
Anthos is a big step forward when dealing with hybrid/multi-cloud setups. It helps with consistency when managing apps across different places and helps us modernize older stuff and get features out faster. It helps us keep things like Kubernetes clusters organized and operating smoothly. But it can be difficult to get started (time and cost) due to the steep learning curve, but it's worth the investment.

“RBAC Integration and Uptime Stable, Third-Party Support and Updates Still Limited”

Anthos allows us to have a management plane across our on-prem, cloud and cloud on Google. Policy control and service mesh integration saved us operations time. The tricky part is that once you get everything running: updating the clusters and keeping the config tool in sync with Google's updates still requires more manual work than we would like. Also we need to be careful about unexpected costs because we forgot to set limits (Would be nice to have some kind of warning)

Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Likes & Dislikes

Like

The best thing about Anthos is the seamless hybrid consistency. It allows you to run GKE wherever you need it (your own servers, Google Cloud, other cloud providers, etc) and your developers can use the same tools/processes everywhere. It is really easy to update older, legacy applications with Anthos by using tools like Migrate. We automatically turned our virtual machines into containers on GKE without rewriting everything from scratch, which saved us a lot of time. Of course, it works seamlessly with Google Cloud Operations Suite including Google Cloud logging, monitoring, alerting, etc. This allows us to get a clear view of our apps across all environments, which simplifies troubleshooting and daily operations.

Like

We liked the one sing-in and permission set up for all clusters with RBAC models. Also the config is git based and allows us to have a maintained version control of everything integrated int the tool. Uptime promised by google is great, we have not faced any problem regarding to these and not even our customers.

Like

Easy cluster management, strong performance and reliability with deep integration with Google Cloud. Logging, monitoring, IAM and VPC integration feels seamless. It's easy to connect GKE to other GCP services without complicated configurations.

Dislike

There is a steep learning curve which makes it feel like a brain teaser initially. It's not for beginners or small teams. There are a lot of features and open-source tech that require a high level of technical know-how and dedicated teams. It's pricey and billed based on vCPU blocks, which can get expensive. If you have monitoring, logging, CI/CD outside of Google, it may be difficult to integrate and you may need to adjust to Anthos's preferred methods.

Dislike

Updates can break, and a missed patch has already caused some of our on-prem clusters to roll back. We had to learn and install a bunch of components before having it operative. Third-party ecosystem is not as rich as for kubernetes

Dislike

Costs can add up with surrounding services. GKE itself is reasonably priced, but the surrounding services will add up quickly. Steep learning curve for beginners. Some features feel Google only.

I have solid experience with GKE, upgrades and autoscaling is smooth. Many cool features are based on openSource projects in the background and the observability default view is amazing, no other cloud provider has that detail with zero-config.
