Microsoft Purview Data Governance Likes & Dislikes
Included with business premium, integrates with Microsoft suite
The power of the different solutions is quite impressive, one example is the DLP policies which can be set as granular as you want. Our company has policies that look across the Microsoft suite and applies differing restrictions depending on what they are. We were also able to block USBs across the entire company from copying data, but due to the granular controls were able to allow certain staff members access (such as IT support). Data Security Posture Management or DSPM has enabled our company to make use of generative AI safely with Purview ensuring that there is no sensitive data being uploaded to these models to ensure no data leakage.
centralized view of data, integration with tools like power BI, automatic classification
Admin panel constantly changes, Expensive licensing if you don't have business premium. Steep learning curve.
Microsoft recommends that all policies work via sensitive info types such as Credit Card Numbers, National Identity Numbers, and other typical types of info (a list is provided). However, as we use an internal numbering system this is not possible as Purview can mistakenly identify these as sensitive when they are not, thus blocking staff from working. Due to this, our policies are not as effective as they could be.
mainly speed when it comes to large data

Granular Policy Controls Enhance Security Operations But Limit Custom Sensitive Data Types
We use Purview for so many operations within our security team that if we didn't have it I genuinely believe we would be seeing security incidents daily. From being able to block USBs and the copying of files with sensitivity labels via the data loss prevention suite or ensuring that generative AI usage is within the company policies via DSPM. We also make use of communications compliance to track and resolve potential insider threats. The policy setup is very simple but robust with drop down boxes so it is intuitive. You can also set policies to run in audit mode just to ensure that nothing breaks when testing/rolling out changes. - IT Associate10B+ USDTransportationReview Source
