Best configuration and automation framework
SaltStack has indeed helped increase our control of configurations as well as consistency with regulations and health. We were able to optimize our server configurations based on their functions as well as the settings that helped to improve our system stability. Saltstack software setup control managment to include system integration, security compliance as we build up the implementation. As a simple way to check whether any of our devices are susceptible to the new 0-day exploits, we use slat. We have been very pleased with the assistance and help that we have received even with the fact that we are using Open Salt and have not yet purchased a license for Enterprise. The Open Salt product is amazing by itself and we are looking to purchase licensing in the near future. This is in two parts, 1. The Open Salt product has already helped up and provided amazing value. It is all console and command line driven and we are looking forward to moving to the Enterprise UI experience that also has much better governance and control. 2. We were left holding the bag...and we found out it was full of gold!
Well we had a CTO that moved all of our infrastructure (190 machines) to SaltStack and didn't tell anyone about how it works and then he just left our company for a new opportunity. We've been picking up the pieces slowly and trying to figure out how it works. We've made some great strides. We're not experts but we know enough to realize how convenient and sweet it makes managing hardware! In hindsight we're very grateful for the organization Salt can bring to configuration management. I'd highly recommend it to anyone that has to manage servers/routers at large scale. It's very rewarding once you become a Salt master!
