SAP Integration Suite API Management Strengthens Governance but Faces Key Feature Gaps
We are making significant investment in SAP Integration Suite - API Management, and it has become a foundational component of our integration landscape. All SAP API's are currently exposed thru this platform, and it effectively fulfils the core requirement of securely publishing and managing API's for internal and external consumers. The Platform provides strong capabilities around API exposure, lifecycle management, and consumer onboarding, enabling standardized and governed API access across our system. From positive standpoint, Integration Suite API Management Offers: 1. A centralized API exposure layer, helping us enforce consistency & governance. 2. Seamless alignment with SAP systems, making in a natural choice for SAP centric landscapes. 3. Scalability and ease of API onboarding, which Supports our growing integration needs. 4. Build-in support for API policies, throttling, and basic security controls, which helps maintain operational stability. However, as our usage matures and API volumes increase, there are some critical feature gaps that, if addressed, would significantly enhance the robustness, security, and operational visibility of the products: 1. DDoS Protection - The platform currently lacks built-in DDoS mitigation capabilities. This poses a risk to service availability, especially for externally exposed and business-critical APIs. 2. Logging Capabilities - There is no out-of-box mechanism to access or review detailed application/API logs. Enhanced native logging would greatly improve operational monitoring, troubleshooting, and audit readiness. 3. Encryption/Decryption Policies - Product does not offer out of box Encryption/Decryption policies and to achieve this need to route request to Cloud Integration which increase the latency and custom development. 4. Message Usage & Consumption Visibility - The Message usage tile in usage session currently reflects only Cloud Integration matrices and doe does not include API management consumptions. A consolidated usage view covering all integration suite components would provide better transparency and capacity planning. 5. Client ID & Secret Auto Expiry - The platform does not currently support automatic expiry or rotations of client IDs & Secrets. Introducing this capability would significantly strengthen security posture and help align with modern security and compliance standards. 6. Search capability in APIM Application section - The platform currently lacks a search capability within the APIM applications section. As the number of onboarded consumers grows, this significantly impacts readability and usability. Introducing a search feature would greatly improve navigation and overall operational efficiency. 7. APIM Policy Template - Global Manageability - Although template for policies can be created, importing a template into the API results in the creation of an independent copy of the policy. Consequently, any subsequent global changes to the template are not reflected across APIs, limiting centralized governance and increasing maintenance efforts.
