Impressive leadership in AI offset by limitations in team selection process
Thoughtworks are arguably the best in the business when it comes to thought leadership, and that reputation is well deserved. Their UK-based consultants are genuinely excellent at framing problems, positioning solutions, and bringing a level of rigour to planning and programme management that stood out. Where they really differentiated themselves was in AI, generative AI, and modern engineering practices, these were areas where their people clearly led rather than followed. The challenge comes when you scale. Once you move beyond the senior UK consultants into a larger delivery team, the quality becomes more variable, as it does with most suppliers. Unlike most, however, Thoughtworks does not allow clients to interview engineers before they join an account, a policy rooted in confidence in their standards, but one that in practice led us to replace more people than we would have with a partner where we had prior visibility of who we were getting. On balance, Thoughtworks delivered a competent and professionally managed engagement. Planning and transition were the strongest phases. Delivery itself was solid but not exceptional, and broadly comparable to other capable suppliers at a similar scale. It is worth noting that a significant proportion of the engineering work is resourced from India rather than near-shore, which in our experience did not perform as well as Eastern European near-shore alternatives, which could be due to the time different with the UK, and this should be factored into expectations given the premium pricing that comes with the Thoughtworks brand. I would recommend them, particularly for consultancy, thought leadership, or engagements where the quality of strategic thinking matters more than raw delivery throughput.
