The Tyk Operator and the professional developer portal are the two features that differentiate Tyk from the other api gateway solutions. Those happened to be two features we needed for our product and using Tyk saved us months of work.
- Customisability using plugins - Written in golang, hence fast in processing - Flawless and smooth deployment process
Hybrid Gateways - Kubernetes native allows us to control and easily scale our gateways/data planes, but not worry about the overhead of managing the Control Plane. Tyk Pump - Get the metadata needed about the API Traffic in several popular formats Sole focus of the company - Focused on making the best API Gateway and a big player in the industry support of the API culture Support - Excellent experience with their support teams
The tyk operator is not open source anymore, but after talking to Tyk, we understand the rationale and are ok with it. The bootstrapping process of the developer portal could be refined. The lack of a slack/discord user community
Plugin management was a bit problematic. Also, the overall deployment process requires improvement. Some improvements made earlier were specific to the OS whereas it requires building each separately.
Control plane UI takes a while to get used to as it is layout can be confusing. No Control Plane summary of transactions if using hybrid data planes.

Tyk's Gateways, Pump and Support Make them a Leader for Anyone Looking for an API Gateway
Tyk team has been exceptional to deal with. The sales and solution architects are very knowledgeable and responsive. The ease of setting up the environments was a plus, and then tuning them to get it perfect involved back and forth that they were very helpful with. The hybrid gateways were exactly what we needed and are working flawlessly in production. Their customer portals did meet our use cases so we needed to build our own, but use their APIs as needed. During contract renewal they worked very closely with us and we were able to come up with an agreement that worked out for both of us.
