Overview

Product Information on AWS Certificate Manager

Updated 13th October 2025

What is AWS Certificate Manager?

AWS Certificate Manager is a software that facilitates the management, provisioning, and deployment of digital SSL or TLS certificates. The software automates the process of renewing, deploying, and tracking certificates for websites and applications that run on Amazon Web Services infrastructure. AWS Certificate Manager helps organizations secure network communications and establish the identity of websites over the internet as well as resources on private networks. It handles tasks such as certificate creation, validation, and lifecycle management, aiming to reduce the manual effort required for managing security certificates and to address business challenges related to web security and regulatory compliance.

AWS Certificate Manager Pricing

AWS Certificate Manager software applies a pricing model that charges for certificates provisioned for use outside of Amazon Web Services and for private certificates issued through its private certificate authority. Public certificates for use within AWS services are available at no additional cost, while private certificates incur charges based on the number issued and managed.

“ACM Offers Cost-Free HTTPS in AWS but Limited Flexibility for External Use”

As an admin, it's a relief not to manage the certificate renewals anymore and AWS certificate manager just provides this functionality. If all your workloads are on AWS, then ACM is a no brainer. Plus, it's at zero cost to use it with AWS native services. Simply attach and forget. This is a big win for getting HTTPS everywhere without a procurement hit.

AWS Certificate Manager Likes & Dislikes

Like

- With automatic renewals, you don't need to track and manage certificate renewals anymore - If you're using a public certificate issued by ACM with integrated AWS services then there is no cost involved - Integrates seamlessly with a bunch of AWS services including CloudFront, ALB, NLB, gateways etc. - It can also integrate with AWS private CA to issue internal certificates

Like

-good price -suitable for aws platform -integrate well with other resource in aws

Like

* Automatic certificates renewal * Seamless AWS integration * Zero cost for public certificates

Dislike

- Private PKI is not cheap since there is a monthly CA cost plus a per-certificate charge - It's not that flexible when it comes to installing certificates directly on the instance or non-AWS platforms - There are some service quotas like number of certificates, SAN limits etc.

Dislike

-not able to use same certificate across region -not able to use for other cloud platform and on-premise -not available to also 3rd party and client server

Dislike

* AWS Vendor lock-in * Limited flexibility with external DNS provider (Route 53 simplifies a lot the process) * Not all AWS regions offer the service

Reliable, scalable and hassle-free cert management

    5.0

AWS Certificate Manager has been an solid tool for managing SSL/TLS certificates in our environment. It has helped a lot to simplify the process of issuing, deploying, and renewing certificates, which used to be a manual and error-prone task. Automation for renewals and easy integration with other AWS services has worked very well. The only challenge we faced was the initial learning curve in understanding how to properly configure the certificate validation, especially with DNS-based validation, but once set up, it has been pretty seamless, all in all.
