AWS Snowball (Legacy) Likes & Dislikes

Like

It drastically reduced the time needed to move terabytes of data compared to traditional upload methods. The service is secure, durable and integrates with AWS S3 buckets once the data is ingested.

Like

It's great for active system writing . You must freeze or snapshot the database because files that are modified during transfer may not import correctly.

Like

It provides key functionality for migrating large sets of data to the cloud from on-prem. Once you get going, it provides all the required functionality. Consulting services are available from the vendor to provide additional support.

Dislike

The initial setup and shipping coordination can be a bit of cumbersome, especially when dealing with multiple devices. Also the documentation could be more detailed for troubleshooting on-premise deployments.

Dislike

The data has to be frozen while you are copying

Dislike

It was very difficult to get it off the ground and going, we had to engage consulting services to make sense of it. It took some time to get the right people in the room and communicating, we also had issues with devices being damaged on delivery.

Device Facilitates Large Data Migration But Requires Detailed AWS Security Setup

Device is complex to use, but provides a great service when you get the right information. We had a difficult time working with AWS to get all of the permissions/security correct out of the gate and understanding how to physically transfer the data to the device.

AWS Snowball Provides Reliable Solution for Secure Large-Scale Data Transfers

    4.0
    Sep 18, 2025
AWS Snowball is a practical choice when network-based transfers aren't feasible. The appliance makes it possible to move large amounts of data into the AWS environment without waiting weeks for uploads. The devices are rugged, encrypted by default, and come with straightforward job tracking, which helps during the migration process. The biggest benefits are speed and security for bulk transfers. However, scheduling shipments can sometimes add time, and very large projects may require multiple devices. It's also less cost-effective for smaller or recurring data loads.

Thanks to AWS Snowball we solved the problem of moving terabytes of data without saturating our network. The only limitation was with logistics and lead times, but once planned, the process runs well.
