Overview

Product Information on AWS Snowball (Legacy)

Updated 13th October 2025

What is AWS Snowball (Legacy)?

AWS Snowball is a data transfer software designed to help organizations move large amounts of data into and out of Amazon Web Services. The software supports secure and efficient data migration by providing encryption and integration with AWS storage services. AWS Snowball addresses business problems related to data transfer bottlenecks by enabling the transfer of terabytes or petabytes of data without relying on network bandwidth limitations. It automates the logistics of data movement, accelerates migration timelines, and maintains the integrity and security of data during transit. The software is utilized in scenarios such as cloud migration, backup, disaster recovery, and analytics projects requiring high-volume data transfer.

AWS Snowball (Legacy) Pricing

AWS Snowball software uses a pay-as-you-go pricing model where charges are based on the type of device, the duration of its use, and the amount of data transferred. Additional fees may apply for extra days, shipping, and data transfer out to other AWS services. There is no upfront commitment required, and pricing is determined by region and usage patterns.

“Troubles with AWS Snowball ordering and delivery. Transfer to S3 was flawless”

3.0
Sep 20, 2024
Overall, we had an average experience migrating with migrating data via the AWS Snowball. We had 151 TBs of data that we wanted backed up in the cloud and chose to use the Snowball device to copy the initial data set. It took over 2 weeks for the 210 TB model to show up as an option for us to order. We had to go back and forth with AWS to enable that option, which was painful. The transfer from our storage array to the Snowball device was successful but then our AWS Snowball was delivered to an AWS sorting facility instead of the AWS datacenter. It took another 2 weeks to get the Snowball to the AWS Oregon datacenter for ingestion.

Performance of AWS Snowball (Legacy) Across Market Features

AWS Snowball (Legacy) Likes & Dislikes

Like

The security of the hardware reflects AWS enterprise level standards. Snowball also integrates well with other AWS services.

Like

It was very easy to get set up and the Snowball interface was intuitive. The data transfer was very fast and we were able to confirm that all the data was successfully transferred. I also liked the updates once the data was being ingested into the AWS S3 bucket.

Like

Effective bulk data transport: The device is faster and safer to transport petabytes of data compared to using the internet.Security as a feature: Snowball uses tamper-resistant hardware and 256-bit encryption to protect the handling of sensitive data.Simplicity: Device installation, activation, and integration with AWS services (e.g., S3 and EC2) are simple and documented.

Dislike

Snowball is quite bulky. Although the size labelled 80TB but the actual size is less.

Dislike

The ordering process for the 210 TB model was very onerous and time consuming. There were too many delays and approvals that needed to occur. The 210 TB model is extremely noisy and I guess that's understandable but it was annoying while the data transfer was occurring. I really was disappointed in AWS not recognizing right away that the snowball was shipped to AWS sorting facility. In my mind they should've recognized it immediately and got it shipped off the AWS datacenter to have the data ingested into the S3 bucket. This process should be more more streamlined, there were too many delays.

Dislike

Shipping and handling lag: Delivery schedules had an intermittent issue, especially for global shipments. Limited tracking transparency: It was not always easy or real-time to track the status of data import. Steep learning curve initially: New users may have difficulty getting the appliance up and running and running jobs via the AWS console without guidance.
