Base SAS Likes & Dislikes
I fully understand the way SAS operates so I can quickly debug code. The way it interacts with data might be slow but it will not run out of RAM on a PC. The documentation style has not changed much over the years, except that it is now available online. I also like the consistency between PC and cloud based versions.

Read Full ReviewSAS Base is the heart of all that is SAS. It is a decent development tool for writing both SAS Base code, But we also use it to write and compile SAS AF catalogs to build web applications.
Read Full ReviewI wish it was cheaper. The university almost went away from SAS due to the cost. It is not seen as relevant by the younger programmer or analyst that prefer R and Python. Since they go through a very traditional product development cycle, it is difficult to get new techniques quickly without creating custom code.
Read Full Review- Steep learning curve - Outdated user interface and poor user experience - limited integration with modern data science and AI technologies
Read Full ReviewSAS Base lacks code completion and does not have integrated documentation. I don't think SAS Institute will ever enhance this, as they now tend to go to SAS Studio, an in-browser SAS Base editor.

Base SAS Reviews and Ratings

SAS Maintains Reliability and Consistency Despite Slower Data Interactions and High Costs
Overall, SAS is a great product. It has several key features; the models and methods are externally validated, the documentation is well done and consistent, and it allows for old code to be used still today with little modifications. I have been using SAS for nearly 25 years and these are great. - Data Engineer10B+ USDBankingReview Source
Base SAS Tool Offers Stability But Lacks Modern Code Completion Features
Base SAS tool is very stable and reliable. SAS as a vendor provides complete documentation, technical articles on blogs and newsletters. As power users, we have the opportunity to meet our SAS account manager and discuss. We have an internal SAS support team, and if they don't know the answer, they can rely on the real SAS support team. - VP, Data and Analytics<50M USDHealthcare and BiotechReview Source
Established Performance Faces Challenges Amid Modern Alternatives and Minimal Upgrades
Vendor is responsive when we have questions, but that's rare - the product is proven over decades and just works. - IT Manager10B+ USDHealthcare and BiotechReview Source
Strong Support and Simplicity Noted, But High Cost and UI Limitations Persist
The customer support engagement has been excellent. The implementation at our company leaves something to be desired, and I don't believe that we're taking advantage of everything that's available. - Director of Research and DevelopmentGov't/PS/EdEducationReview Source
Extensive Support Found in SAS Documentation Offset by Price and Usability Concerns
SAS is a reliable workhorse in the data management and analytics world with extremely detailed documentation and engaged user forums that help you achieve your goals. I know exactly what is occurring, every time, when a colleague uses a specific procedure. That consistency is crucial to our operations.
