Points which I would like to appreciate about GitLab are as follows: 1) Capability of providing dynamic test scans helps us keep us up to date with our code and helps us to see what we are doing wrong or what needs to be changed in order to fix the bugs in our environment. 2)Source Code Management is done very efficiently with the tool and it requires simple code like commit and push in order to save our code or branch on a repository. 3) It allows a team to work on the project at same time and keeps record of it and alert you when this is same changes happened on the same part of the code.

i appreciate the integrated devsecops ecosystem, where source code, ci/cd pipelines, security scanning and infra as code coexist in ta single platform. The stability and simplicity of the self-managed installation and the maturity of CI/CD capabilities are also majir strengths.

The points the company can improve are as follows: 1) First time setup can be improved as it becomes an issue sometimes when working on Mac OS. 2) While working on a branch it should specify all the time on which branch we are working instead of running code again and again to check the branch name. 3)Little upgradation of user interface would be more appreciated by the users.

Steeper learning curve CI/CD setup can be time-consuming

The per-user licensing model is restricitive and reduces flexibility when managing service accounts or external collaborators. Additionally, some valuable project management features are locked behind paid tiers, which limits adoption for organizations truing to consolidate tools.

It's a 5-step process which you will need to correlate for your environment. 1. Integrate dependency scanners (e.g., GitLab's built-in scanner, Trivy, Snyk, OWASP Dependency-Check or your existing Nexus repo) to flag outdated dependencies and use GitLab’s security dashboard to monitor deprecated packages. 2. Set up GitLab CI/CD rules to fail builds if EOL/EOS dependencies are detected and enforce allow/block lists for dependencies using GitLab’s security policies. 3. Configure GitLab to generate reports when a dependency is approaching its EOL and see if you can use GitLab’s webhook integrations to notify security teams via Slack, email, or Jira. 4. Implement dependency auto-updating tools (e.g., Renovate, Dependabot) to replace (identified & manually verified) EOL/EOS components. If no direct upgrade path exists, isolate the outdated component via containerization or sandboxing. 5. Maintain a historical record of all SBOMs and EOL/EOS alerts for compliance audits (ISO 27001, NIST, etc.). Regularly conduct security reviews using GitLab’s security reports.

What has been your experience utilizing GITLAB (not GITHUB) to implement CI/CD for Athena and AWS GLUE, specifically for a process to transfer changes in Athena Views from the development environment to production?

my overall experience with gitlab, from installation to daily maintenance, has been very awesome. the platform is stable, reliable and offers a comprehensive suite of devsecops capabilities. however, some features like software project management, could be available on free tier. The model based licensing using per-user pricing can create a rigidity in account management for organizations with large or dynamic teams.

We have been using GitLab in our project for our CI/CD pipelines and overall the experience has been great. Setup takes some effort initially, however once it is configured, everything becomes smoother. A few areas like pipeline visibility and occasional performance slowdowns could be better.
