“MapR product is great, but need to improve stability and more efficient technical support.”

MapR ecosystem is great, but user group is relatively small. There are not many troubleshooting tips online as Cloudera. Our administration team has to submit tickets to MapR to tune our cluster. It takes up to several weeks to resolve issues for our developers.

HPE Data Fabric Software Likes & Dislikes

Like

The unified global namespace is a standout feature that eliminates data silos by ingesting data in the form of files, objects, streams and tables into one logical data plane. The multi protocol support allow our diverse set of applications and tools to access the same data without complex and brittle data movement or format conversions which improves both efficiency and data consistency

Like

MapR's support to pig, hive, spark as well as oozie is great. Our pipelines were developed based on the MapR ecosystem. They are running stable and easy to manage.

Like

-MapR-FS -encryption at directory level

Dislike

The initial setup is complex and the admin team has a steep learning curve. The platform is incredibly powerful but the UI also requires a highly technical team for implementation and ongoing management.

Dislike

1. Third party tools which support hdfs have to recompile to use on maprfs. Maprfs is totally not compatible with hdfs. I cannot understand. MapR can easily update the code to let hdfs path automatically be recognized as maprfs, but I don't know why mapr tries to discourage users to use tools which was developed only for hdfs. 2. Maprfs mount sometimes can become really slow, admin team has to reboot to resolve the issue. 3. The upgrade process has too many manual process. MapR can simplify it. 4. Overall the MapR streaming and MapRDB products are too expensive.

Nice optimization with MapR-FS (over old and limited HDFS) and cool feature of securing with encryption at directory level not the entire drive.

Best big data platform, though better UI needed

MapR is built for performance and scale. Among other things, the file system is not HDFS and hence removes all the limitation of HFFS. It is a full read/write files system, which means you can use industry protocols like NFS to ingest data. The default file size is 8kb, which means you can do small writes instead of the 64MB/128MB that is required for HDFS.

I was responsible for that installation the MapR and configuration on 8 servers. MapR has a great file system for handle data input or output which is named MapR-FS. Our sensor datas are stored in MapR DB by OpentTSDB. I can say numerous good things about MapR. Maybe cost was a disadvantage. Because it is really expensive tool. They are working with high qualified engineers.
