My 4 years of experience as a systems consultant supporting Planning Analytics in highly complex environments has been solid, highlighting the tool as an extremely powerful calculation engine, but one that requires a high level of seniority in governance. The system itself rarely presents infrastructure failures.

IBM Planning Analytics Likes & Dislikes

Like

I like its exceptional ability to accelerate complex budgeting and forecasting, and that it offers a familiar Excel Interface alongside a modern web-based workspace. I also love how it replaces manual, error-prone spreadsheets with high-performance, real-time and flexible multidimensional modelling which is driven by TM1 engine.

Like

What I appreciate most is the flexibility and scalability of IBM Planning Analytics. It allows organizations to create highly customized planning models that adapt to different business needs, from financial forecasting to operations planning. The integration with Excel (PAX) is a huge advantage, since it leverages a familiar interface for end users while still connecting directly to powerful TM1 models in the background.

Like

It is a very good forecasting tool, it allows one to generate detailed forecasts and budgets which are quite easy to understand and present in meetings with finance teams. I also like the fact that one can work in excel but feed into the TM1 DB with PAfE i.e. Planning Analytics for Excel.

Dislike

While I appreciate its robust performance, its steep learning curve, high technical complexity and outdated user experience feels less intuitive than modern competitors.

Dislike

the biggest challenge with IBM Planning Analytics is its complexity during setup and maintenance. Building and maintaining models often requires specialized technical expertise, which can make the initail implementation time consuming and resource intensive. For non techinical users, some advanced functions can feel less intuitive without proper training.

Dislike

The AI and predictive features are not that advanced, if the product management teams could work on infusing more AI capabilities and try to steer away from being very dependent on Excel. Small sized companies are sometimes struggling with TCO though the tool is quite powerful.
