Ignition: A solid platform for integrating IoT and SCADA in agile and scalable projects

    4.0
    Nov 12, 2025
Ignition has been a key enabler to validate a distributed IoT Architecture in our organization. We implemented a Proof of Concept using Ignition Edge on a Raspberry Pi 400 integrated with physical sensors (Temperature and Humidity) vi Arduino, achieving real-time visualization and control from a Central Gateway. The experience was stable, the learning curve reasonable, and the documentation clear. Its flexibility to integrate standard protocols (OPC UA, Modbus, MQTT) ensured smooth interoperability between OT and IT environments.

Performance of Ignition Across Market Features

Ignition Likes & Dislikes

Like

Easy deployment. Great compatibility with various other platforms, protocols and operating systems. Licensing models that allow you to pay for the features you need but not limit the size and scale of your development. The support, community and training is great and is not paywalled. Culture of supporting users and integrators.

Like

What we like the most is the real-time monitoring feature of the product and the rapid development of any SCADA project.

Like

1. Modular architecture that scales easily from proof of concept to production 2. Excellent compatibility with embedded hardware and hybrid cloud platforms. 3. Fast learning curve and technical community. 4. Flexible licensing model without tag limits, ideal for experimentation and rapid prototyping 5. Highly customizable HMI dashboards built through Ignition Designer.

Dislike

Report designer is a bit clunky compared to the other features of the product. As the feature set grows, the learning curve increases. You do need to have a good plan in place for large deployments to keep them optimized for performance and organized. A lot of features and ways of doing things means flexibility, but also means a lot of right and wrong way to do things.

Dislike

We faced scalability issues during product deployment and the deployment process is difficult too. Also, it is a costly product.

Dislike

1. Initial setup on ARM-based devices requires some manual dependency adjustments (Java and systemd) 2. Distributed alarm and UDT configuration still demands custom scripting 3. Designer performance could be optimized for low-power hardware
