Product Information on MATLAB

Updated 13th October 2025

What is MATLAB?

MATLAB is a software developed for numerical computing, data analysis, and algorithm development. It provides an environment for matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, and creation of user interfaces. The software supports integration with other languages and applications, and it is widely used for tasks such as data visualization, simulation, and prototyping in engineering, scientific research, and computational finance. MATLAB is utilized for solving complex mathematical problems, automating computations, and facilitating the modeling and simulation of systems. It addresses business challenges by enabling users to efficiently analyze data, develop algorithms, and generate reports or applications within a unified platform.

MATLAB Pricing

MATLAB software uses a license-based pricing model that includes options for individual, academic, and organizational use. The software offers both perpetual and term licenses, with pricing determined by license type and user category. Additional toolboxes and modules are available for purchase separately and are licensed based on usage needs.

“Mathematics & Engineering-Centric IDE with user-friendly GUI”

5.0
May 17, 2026
Extremely powerful IDE for prototyping code - especially for engineering environments. The vast selection of libraries (toolboxes) ensures that almost any kind of computation can be performed easily without manually writing complex algorithms. The UI makes everything easy - from importing data from unusually formatted files, to finding the right functions for writing your code, to debugging by adding breakpoints and viewing variables mid-execution.

Deciding Factors: MATLAB Vs. Market Average
Performance of MATLAB Across Market Features

MATLAB Likes & Dislikes

Like

1. Function documentation and examples easily available directly inside the IDE (including related functions!) 2. Easy GUI-based debugging (adding breakpoints and viewing variable values just by clicking) as opposed to traditional debuggers that need a separate workflow and lots of commands. 3. Interactive trainings available inside the IDE. 4. Availability of lots of toolboxes for various engineering fields, including simulation toolboxes for electrical circuits, drivetrains, thermal simulation, battery modelling, etc. 5. Lots of easy to use functions for data visualization such as 2D and 3D plots, histograms, etc.

Like

Great for creating calculations and formulas for engineering workspace

Like

The development environment is intuitive and makes code development fun.

Dislike

1. The desktop version has become very slow to load over the years, but it can work reasonably fast after loading. 2. MATLAB online is slow and laggy whenever there are any kind of graphical windows open. 3. Installation is very cumbersome when you have to select which toolboxes you need without understanding what most of them do.

Dislike

Vendor never offers discounts and yearly subscription always increases in cost to run and maintain

Dislike

You require technical skills to use the tool.
