Independently of the type of workload it offers great capabilities, and its own managing Os. Focused on minimizing the latency, and providing redundancy on their own appliances to make sure the service is continuous. Never experienced it as end user, but if a disk fails they can predict that and act in consequence - which i think is the most valued feature.
1. data deduplication and compression feature saves overall cost. 2. DC-DR data replication and MetroCluster feature. 3. non-disruptive upgrade feature as no downtime required. 4. Hot swappable disk and other active components / 5. Netapp FLI tool for LUN migration from third party arrays.
Netapp's strengths lie in its versatility and data protection. It supports every imaginable storage protocol. Advanced administration capabilities from CLI such as query/sub query based modifications make administration at scale very easy. Vol move capabilities and storage clustering make refresh of the platform much easier, far less disruptive and far less risky.
Some persons might find the ontap complex if they never used it before, the licesnes are not cheap. Other consideration is that depending on the appliance that you buy if you need to expand it youll need another one, but this problem its generic to all vendors.
1. Pricing is a bit high compared to other storage like Hitachi, Lenovo and other competitors. 2. Troubleshooting issues related to NAS access bit challenging.
For inexperienced admins it can be quite a learning curve to get the most out of the product and reliably administer it. CLI is a must for advanced administration.
