We aren't governed by the software - we can use it as we desire, and our investment of information over time has yielded great results. We can associate anything with the tool. We have Technology objects associated with Capabilities. with Vendors. with Organizations. with Requirements. with Business Process diagrams. With UML Use Case diagrams. With Roadmaps. with other Technology objects. The tool easily indicates what's interrelated with easy queries to the database built into the tool (tell me everything related to an object you clicked in a diagram). Additionally, graphically, it's unbeatable. It supports hundreds of technologies from ArchiMate to UML to Kanban to Zackmann's to Mind mapping (and everything in between). All of the information we have amassed is shareable with easy windows copy and paste to any application (we often output to PDF to share), or through their companion product Prolaborate which makes the diagrams visible through web links (all wrapped in nice security role based protections).
The reports you get on PDF can look pretty neat in the end I can pick something out of the folders in the browser and put it in my graph I can align objects, like in PPT.

There is a learning curve to understand the tool. New features and releases often completely scramble the options menus with little rhyme or reason. Even their most seasoned support guys get stumped trying to find an option where it used to be in the last version. You also need to have an SQL person on staff to really get the bang for the buck with the tool. It's not hard, and there are reporting features also built into the tool - but often we ask how do we and the answer is - Write some SQL, here's an example of the kind of thing you need to do.
It does not support data modellering - you have to make lots of adjustments and workarounds It keeps all elements in folders which makes it hard to navigate Publishing is basically providing PDF:s of graphs and putting them on the intranet, very rudimentary. No Lifecycle management

I spend my days trying to overcome the obstacles with this product in order to produce information architecture, i.e. data models and conceptual models. It doesn't support data modellering and others cannot easily get access to my work. Surpassing Expectations: SPARX's Major Role in EA Implementation
SPARX is a great tool to use as the typical Reference Library for an EA implementation. I evaluated a number of products before landing on this one. They are the most extensible, and assisted us in migrating our old Rational Software Architect and Rational system architect drawings into SPARX in exactly 2 weeks. Over 1000 diagrams were successfully migrated - hands free - with their ModelFlow application. Additionally, it has all the features we were eager to get - User based role protection, diagramming, dramatic extensibility, and the ability to configure the SPARX library to hold any attribution we desired with all aspects of the data management - from Capabilities, to Vendors to Applications. Additionally, since it's a relational database, we were able to link it up with Tableau and create great reports for our business partners day 1. Product a little complex to learn but very complete in terms of features with a vintage interface. Modeling with Archimate or BPMN is a walk in the park...
