Features of Backup as a Service
Optional Features:
Security: Encryption of backup data is standard. However, some vendors also offer bring your own key and encryption key rotation. In addition, the backup data is stored in the vendor’s security context so that a security breach at the customer’s site doesn’t allow the attacker to delete or corrupt backups.
Storage: Bring your own storage (BYOS), vendor-hosted data center, multiple cloud target options and data tiering to lower costs for customers.
Vaults: Some vendors offer immutable secure vault solutions for its backup copies of on-premises or public cloud data. These solutions provide immutability, air-gapping and recovery assurance for protected data.
Add-on services: Some vendors offer additional services such as e-discovery, archiving, security scanning of backups for embedded malware, ransomware anomaly detection, sensitive data scanning and generative AI (GenAI) data access.
Self-service: Some BaaS vendors offer self-service restore capability for clients to perform recovery actions without having to first contact the BaaS vendor for assistance.
Reporting: BaaS vendors provide some type of dashboard to track backup activity, success/failure of backup jobs, storage consumption and cost. Some vendors offer advanced reporting as part of their BaaS solution, such as customizable detailed reports, data and backup analytics and visualizations, predictive analysis, capacity planning, and metadata analysis.
Local backup copy: Cloud or vendor-managed data centers are a convenient location for backup data; however, mass restores can be slow. To address this problem, many BaaS vendors support storing more recent copies of backup on local storage at the customer site.
Initial full backup: Many BaaS vendors can accelerate the initial full backup to the cloud data center. This can be performed by physically shipping external hard drives to the BaaS vendor, or by leveraging the bulk data transfer services of the public cloud provider.
