Server Virtualization Reviews and Ratings

What is Server Virtualization?

Server virtualization includes a range of technologies that abstract an underlying infrastructure layer (networking, storage and compute [including memory]). In doing so, it improves hardware utilization, workload portability, automation and availability. Server virtualization is most often associated with hypervisor-based server workloads running in data center environments on industry-standard servers. In reality, server virtualization incorporates multiple technologies, spans locations from public cloud to edge, and supports initiatives for both cloud-native transformation and infrastructure modernization. It includes hardware- and software-based technologies.

"VMares vSphere : a must have solution for virtualization"

I have been using vSphere, particularly the ESXi Hypervisor, for years. This allow us to virtualize servers and archieve excellent performance in virtualization, with efficient management of hardware resources. The vSphere API allow us to deploy virtualize server automatically. Coupled with vCenter, which enables centralized management of virtualized servers, and its impressive DRV feature, it provides us a stable platform.

"Microsoft Hyper V a good choice for managing VMs"

Microsoft Hyper V allows you the creation and management of virtual machines (Windows and Linux OS). First of all you need at least a windows server machine with the ideal hardware configuration, the you have to install the hyper v role. Be sure to have enough cpu, memory and storage resources to allocate (obviously more virtual machines mean more hardware resources to assign to them). You can create and then modify your virtual machine from the main interface (you can add disk space without power off the VM, but if you need to add memory memory and/or CPUs you mjust instead), and also take checkpoints (also known as snapshots), a really useful feature especially if you are going to to software changes and be sure to quickly roll back in case of need. If you have two nodes you can live migrate the virtual machines from one to another without stopping them (and the vm keeps on working during this process). There is a lot of documentation on internet and you will always find the information you are looking for. No problem with most of backup software, as Hyper V is widely supported. I used Hyper V also on an "old" Windows Server 2012r2 and it was stable; it is easy to deploy and configure. Remember to install Failover Cluster Manager too if you have more than one node (you should have). The interface is simple, there are many commands on the left and also you can launch many by right clicking the mouse on the machine (restart, power off, power on, connect, add/modify hardware, take a checkpoint, move to another node...). Connecting on a VM from Hyper V is useful when you have troubles and can't connect e.g. by standerd RDP or SSH. Hyper V allows you to save money, you don't need to buy a virtualization software, and it' perfect fro small business.

"Sugar, spice and everything nice"

Didn't think I would ever switch to something else, but since I started using SLES with my company i really started enjoying it. It's just intuitive with a great selection of packages in the official repositories. Regular security patches, long support cycles and OUTSTANDING support. I even started using OpenSUSE Leap privately since its 1:1 binary compatible with SLES which makes everything so much easier. Absolutely no performance issues or other problems. We currently use it for all our servers (300+)
