It makes it easy to search through large amounts of data. Allows users to find what they are looking for in a simple straight froward manner. Facet searches based on the result set make it even easier.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of innovation being added to the project. It has a large footprint. This is especially true when you have to setup up multiple indexes to ensure high availability. We currently have over a hundred hosts supporting an index on only 50M records.
