What I like most is how quickly we can design build and change enterprise workflows using low code. Whilst still handling fairly complex end to end processes. The platform's strong automation and integration capabilities let us bring multiple systems and teams into a single orchestrated workflow.
Flexibility, low code
Appian integrates well with external systems via REST APIs, SOAP services, databases and RPA components. I also appreciate the native deployment pipelines to reduce delivery times. We use the Automated Versioning Manager (AVM), available on the AppMarket, to manage Appian applications and database DDL files in a GitHub repository.
More advanced use cases can become quite complex and hard to express in its expression language. So you quickly hit a steeper learning curve than the low no code label syggests. In addition, licensing can become expensive at scale and some UI elements and customisation options feel limiting compared to more modern or fully bespoke front-end frameworks.
Closed community, so hard to find avice generally available
When business stakeholders ask for highly customized, pixel-perfect interfaces or advanced front-end behaviors (dynamic layouts, complex animations, highly interactive components), you quickly realize the boundaries of the framework. Performance issues are usually related to how the data model is structured and queried, so you have to deeply understand how Appian executes queries under the hood. There are some limitations with offline capabilities and mobility features, so for these scenarios we preferred to use a different platform.

What has worked well is the speed at which you can move from idea to a working application. The Visual Process Modeler is intuitive. Another strong point is that you don't have to invent enterprise-grade controls from scratch, they're already embedded in the platform.
