The things we like most about the Avalara platform are its ease-of-integration with our clients' systems, the ability it has to adapt to the ever-changing sales tax landscape, and the immediate return-on-investment that our clients see when they are connected to the platform.
The returns module is a game changer. Definitely something everyone should be using to save time when you file in multiple states.
Most of all, I like the consistency of Avalara Returns and the ability to apply exemptions to exempt transactions. The User Interface is simple and easy to use. I particularly like the ability to download the most up to date forms for exemption.
Even though the Avalara interface is well laid-out, it can still be overwhelming to a user that has never seen it before. The best thing to do in this case is to take some time to become familiar with all the settings, and then use Avalara's support resources to help explain what everything means.
Negotiations are painful. Would prefer a 3-year contract. Calling customer service is frustrating. The communication barrier is hard to get past when trying to explain an issue and understand the solution. When I find an answer in Avi or knowledge base, it doesn't always work and I end up calling customer support anyway... which is why we shouldn't have to pay extra to call in. If online resources were better, it would eliminate the need for a call.
Contract negotiations have been difficult. Customer support is not always thorough. Communication with previous account management has been inconsistent.
