Things that I personally really appreciate about the service are: 1. It is a really easy setup and configuration as the guided steps make it simple to configure. 2. Automated failover testing allows you to verify recovery plans without affecting production. 3. It allows me to monitor the health of my workloads and notifies me of any issues present.
Infra team liked the promptness of this vendor for any infra related work. This vendor provided detailed technical items in the quotes and SOW which helped the team to make the proactive decision on whether to this vendor or not.
Disaster recovery within the same ecosystem is easy because of the integration with Azure services. Thus, complexity is reduced and workloads are replicated across cloud and on-premise environments. Cost-effectiveness of Azure Site Recovery is also a good feature because there is no need for the organizations to duplicate the physical infrastructure. Companies can scale resources and pay only for what they use. Automation and replication are also a strength because in the case of an outage workloads can be easily and quickly switched to a secondary site with minimal downtime. This ensures business continuity and eliminates the risk of data loss.
Things that I think should be improved are as follows: 1. The cost adds up exponentially depending on how many machines you're replicating and how often you test failovers. 2. Troubleshooting errors isn't always the easiest of tasks and the vast documentation adds to the technical complexity. 3. Replication of large workloads takes up big chunks of time, especially during the first sync.
The changes the vendor deployed were a bit complex in nature and the vendor was able to provide line by line configuration items. However, there are many other ways to finish the configuration. It would have been better if more technical resources were provided to minimize the disruption within the internal IT team.
One issue with Azure Site Recovery is that its initial deployment is complex and the team needs to have strong knowledge. The learning curve is also steep. Error messages are sometimes not very clear which makes it difficult to identify and resolve the issue fast enough. In some cases, the documentation and troubleshooting guides are also unclear or incomplete. Azure Site Recovery can struggle with workloads generating very high data change rates. Thus, some databases and other heavy systems can have performance issues and can face replication delays.
