We have used Watchguard Firebox for a number of years now and just upgraded our physical hardware this year to a newer version. I like the ease of migration to new hardware (as long as you are moving within the firebox ecosystem, other vendors may vary). The GUI interface is intuitive and easy to use. Offers great security and bandwidth saving features.
The management plane is a little easier to navigate than other competing devices we have worked with.
Firebox used at the edge of infrastructure allow us to easily implement NAT with ease and great flexibility not found on other vendors. Branch Office VPNs and Mobile VPN (IKEv2) allow us to create a secure ecosystem with remote users and offices alike.
Almost every feature it seems needs a license to function. The licenses are on a subscription model, so be prepared for a yearly spend if you intend to use these long term. It's not cheap, but comparable to other vendors using the subscription model.
Continuous crashing, extreme slowness, DDOS attacks have shut the firewall down entirely in the past for us, constant downtimes
We miss the opportunity to easily integrate into an orchestration/automation framework (Ansible / Nornir), especially when in a fully on prem implementation. We would like to have more insight on the fine metrics of the device, which could allow to understand better which policies and settings have an impact on the device performance.
