What is Hitachi VSP 5000 Series (Legacy)?

Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) 5000 series is a high-end, enterprise data storage solution supporting open systems and mainframe workloads. Hitachi Ops Center management software suite delivers centralized administration, analytics, automation, data protection and cyber-resiliency capabilities. Hitachi Clear Sight provides AI analytics SaaS observability to monitor VSP systems via a cloud-based portal. All VSP storage platforms run the Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) including secure multi-tenancy, quality of service (QoS) for mission-critical applications and data mobility for data resiliency with a true symmetric active-active controller design. Hitachi Accelerated Fabric can scale from dual controllers with quad CPUs to 12 controllers with 24 CPUs supporting up to 33 million IOPS and 69PB of data. Scaling out the system delivers a more resilient data infrastructure solution due to the controller architecture that delivers 100% of data availability.

When we moved to the Hitachi VSP 5600 we moved to an Everflex contract which has enabled us to move to an Opex consumption based model.

What we appreciate most about the Hitachi hardware is its exceptional reliability. Once deployed to production, it performs consistently with minimal need for intervention, effectively becoming a deploy-and-forget component. It is one of the few platforms we operate that provides this level of stability and operational ease which significantly reduced administrative overhead.

GAD is a really good and strong feature. I like the support service, especially the local team. Shadow image in another great feature.

The Ops Center management software is a bit proprietary and runs on on-premises VMs running container (Podman) images. This does require a fair amount of maintenance. Would like to see it move to a Cloud hosted solution like other storage providers.

The steep learning curve for administration is the main drawback.

If the throughput over a single ldev is over 1Gb/s the journal tends to have poor performance.
