Performance of IBM Storage FlashSystem Across Market Features
IBM Storage FlashSystem Likes & Dislikes
The purchased FlashSystems were fully loaded with innovative FCM4 drives that allowed for immediate space reduction with inline compression as well as providing live anomaly detection such as ransomware detection to better protect our environments. The included replication and snapshot licensing was of great use, building our redundancy and protection, and the ease of integration with our backup system was a great plus. Implementing the system was quite a simple task which allowed for a quick migration from our older infra into the new. The reduced size of the new storage array allowed us to save quite a bit on the electrical and cooling portions as well, freeing up rack space considerably, again without losing functionality or performance, but gaining some.
Price was attractive. for the proper use case (lab) it will do OK.
It uses IBM's Spectrum Virtualize software to help enable advanced data services such as data migration, replication, encryption, and compression. It supports NVMe Support, which is a high-speed storage protocol that offers high performance over storage protocols like SAS or SATA. It supports integration with both public and private clouds. It provides high availability that includes dual active controllers, redundant power supplies, cooling, and mirrored storage, ensuring that the system offers service without any outage. It supports synchronous and asynchronous replication, which means we can mirror our data over distributed locations. End-to-end data encryption is available.
The GUI can be a bit annoying with certain tasks. We've personally reported a few times to IBM support that the GUI will refresh its tables at the worst time, for example when looking for specific LUIDs in the table. Your best bet is to use the filter option to limit the table to as few rows as possible without compromising what you are looking for to limit the refresh annoyance. We would also love for IBM to integrate a quorum type of security to allow role based permissions to be very specific instead of just being members of a specific group of administrators.
Reliability was unacceptable, especially for a product that should have reliability as the #1 feature. Eventually IBM management got involved in some of my open tickets and offered apologies but nothing more. Most interactions with support required multiple iterations until they got it right. Getting the correct firmware and instructions for my specific model was always a 2 week saga of back and forth with support.
setup and configuration process is very complex for businesses who do not have a technical team. It is a very expensive storage solution for smaller organizations who have limited budgets. Limited documentation for complex issues.

Frequent Hardware Failures and Prolonged Support Responses Undermine Device Reliability
Reliability is below any reasonable expectations from a storage device. On 1 system I had minimal failures and on another unit I had so many failures it is difficult to keep track. disks went bad and got replaced time after time. controller nodes went bad twice!! may good for a lab which is physically close and accessible to you. - IT MANAGER - STORAGE BACKUP DR & NIX50M-1B USDRetailReview Source
Performance, stability and protection wrapped into one.
After a few years of being an IBM storage customer, running an inventory of older storage arrays virtualized under their SVC platform across different sites, we were reaching a point where we felt the systems could no longer deliver on their promise, being somewhat from an older generation and starting to show their limitations in performance and costs (hardware support, licensing etc). We embarked on a storage revamp project to simplify our infrastructure and reduce our licensing costs, making sure though that we did not lose any functionalities, but that we in fact gained new functionalities and saved money in the long run. We went through a list of requirements and through a list of possible vendors and solutions and chose the IBM FS9500 and IBM FS5200 to fully meet our requirements and then some. FlashSystems provided instant performance improvements in a condensed, fully redundant system, allowing us to perform a quick, seamless migration across all sites. - IT ASSOCIATE1B-10B USDManufacturingReview Source
Detailed Knowledge on IBM Hardware a Must for Migration and Maintenance
- The hardware requires a lot of technical expertise to initially set up. - You must do a lot of research on what RAID Type you want, how you want the pools configured, what snapshotting you'd be doing, etc - The hardware requires a lot of specific IBM knowledge to migrate to, configure correctly, and maintain. - Firmware upgrades can be scheduled by IBM, but generally they expect the customer to perform them. This includes microcode on the drives. Your TA will advise you of them, but you are expected to do the research and apply them yourself - There have been MULTIPLE, SERIOUS, absolutely GAME BREAKING critical issues in only the past 4 years. Think "if this drive is up for 700 days it will die and possibly corrupt all your data" serious. I'm not joking. This is all publicly available information on the internet if you search for IBM FS7300 / Flashsystem series APARs. - The support experience for the above issue was not exactly stellar. - Half of our system had a catastrophic module failure after being in operation for just over 3 years. This is not exemplary reliability in my opinion. 1 of the 2 nodes died on the weekend, and there was no impact to our operations, but hardware should not be having such major issues this early. - System Administrator50M-1B USDEnergy and UtilitiesReview Source
